Polish law names 14 public holidays, and two of them never give anyone a day off: Easter Sunday and Whit Sunday (Zielone Świątki) always fall on a Sunday, which the same law already makes a non-working day. The newest is Christmas Eve, 24 December, added by an amendment of 6 December 2024 and kept for the first time in 2025. In 2026 eight of the 14 fall on a weekday and six on a weekend, and 2027 has the same split.
The list sits in the Non-working Days Act of 18 January 1951, the ustawa o dniach wolnych od pracy, which names the days and then adds every Sunday. Ten of the 14 follow the church year. The four civil days are New Year, 3 May for the constitution of 1791, 11 November for independence in 1918, and 1 May, which the act calls simply the State Holiday (Święto Państwowe) rather than Labour Day.
The Christmas Eve amendment also rewrote the Sunday trading rules. Shops may now open on the three Sundays before 24 December, though no employee can be made to work more than two of them, and the 14:00 closing that used to apply on Christmas Eve now applies only on Holy Saturday.

The first three days of May go by one name, majówka. 2 May is Flag Day and Polish Diaspora Day, both set by statute, but it is a working day, so the run of days off depends on the calendar. In 2026 it goes from Friday 1 May to Sunday 3 May, and Constitution Day is lost to the weekend; in 2027 it goes from Saturday 1 May to Monday 3 May.
A holiday that lands on a Sunday brings no extra day off, which is why few people know that Whit Sunday is on the list at all.
Article 1a of the act lets the Prime Minister declare a further day off by regulation while a state of epidemic threat or epidemic is in force.
Poland also keeps a long list of national days that are working days, among them the Cursed Soldiers on 1 March, National Victory Day on 8 May, the Warsaw Uprising on 1 August and the Greater Poland Uprising on 27 December.

How many public holidays does Poland have in 2026?
Fourteen, the full list in the 1951 act, and eight of them fall on a weekday: 1 and 6 January, Easter Monday on 6 April, 1 May, Corpus Christi on 4 June, 11 November, and 24 and 25 December. Easter Sunday, 3 May, Whit Sunday and 1 November fall on a Sunday in 2026, and 15 August and 26 December on a Saturday.
Is Christmas Eve a day off in Poland?
Yes, since 2025. The amendment is dated 6 December 2024, was published on 30 December and it came into force on 1 February 2025, adding 24 December to the list of non-working days. Before that Christmas Eve was a working day on which shops had to close at 14:00. In 2026 it falls on a Thursday and starts four days off in a row.
Are shops open on Sundays in Poland?
Mostly not. A law of 10 January 2018 bans trading on Sundays and public holidays, with a short list of exceptions: the Sunday before Easter, the last Sunday of January, April, June and August, and, since the 2024 amendment, the three Sundays before Christmas Eve. In 2026 those are 6, 13 and 20 December. On Holy Saturday shops close at 14:00.
What is majówka?
The Polish name for the first days of May, when 1 May, the State Holiday, and 3 May, Constitution Day, sit two days apart. 2 May, Flag Day, is a working day, so a single day of leave closes the gap in years when it falls midweek. In 2027 the three days run from Saturday to Monday with no leave needed.
What are the long weekends in Poland in 2026?
Three need no leave: Easter, from Saturday 4 April to Easter Monday; 1 to 3 May, Friday to Sunday; and Christmas, four days from Thursday 24 December to Sunday 27 December. A day of leave adds three more: Friday 2 January after New Year, Monday 5 January before Epiphany, and Friday 5 June after Corpus Christi.
When are Easter and Corpus Christi in Poland in 2027?
Easter Sunday is 28 March 2027 and Easter Monday, the day off, 29 March. Good Friday is not a public holiday in Poland. Corpus Christi follows on Thursday 27 May, and Whit Sunday on 16 May. In 2026 the same days were 5 and 6 April, 4 June and 24 May.
Why is All Saints' Day a holiday and not All Souls' Day?
Only 1 November is on the list in the 1951 act. All Souls' Day, Zaduszki, follows on 2 November but is a working day, so families visit the graves of their relatives on All Saints' Day instead. In 2026 1 November falls on a Sunday; in 2027 on a Monday, which makes a three-day weekend from Saturday 30 October.
What does Poland mark on 11 November?
