The time zone database first records summer time in Lithuania in 1919 and 1920. It came back under German occupation in 1941 to 1944, on Central European Time. After the war the clocks stood at UTC+3, and the Soviet Union reintroduced summer time on 1 April 1981, which put Lithuania on UTC+4 each summer until 1988. From 1989 the country kept UTC+2 with summer time, spent 1998 and 1999 on Central European Time, then held UTC+2 without any clock change from 2000 to 2002. Summer time has run every year since 2003.
In 2017 the Seimas, Lithuania's parliament, voted for a proposal asking the European Union to reconsider summer time, as the Finnish parliament did the same year. The European Parliament backed an end to seasonal clock changes on 26 March 2019, but the Council of the European Union has not approved the directive, so Lithuania still changes its clocks twice a year.

Common questions
Questions about the time in Lithuania
What time zone is Lithuania in?
Eastern European Time, two hours ahead of UTC, for the winter months, and Eastern European Summer Time, UTC+3, from the last Sunday in March. The time zone database gives the country one entry, Europe/Vilnius, so a clock on the Baltic coast reads the same as one in the capital.
When do the clocks change in Lithuania in 2026?
They went forward on Sunday 29 March 2026, jumping from 03:00 to 04:00, and they go back on Sunday 25 October, from 04:00 to 03:00. Because Lithuania sits an hour east of Central Europe, its clocks move at 03:00 and 04:00 local time, the same instant, 01:00 UTC, as everywhere else in the European Union. In 2027 the changes fall on 28 March and 31 October.
Is Lithuania on the same time as Poland, Latvia and Belarus?
Only Latvia matches it all year. Poland keeps Central European Time and is an hour behind throughout. Belarus has stayed on what it once called summer time since 2011, level with Lithuania from March to October and an hour ahead in winter. Russia's Kaliningrad region keeps UTC+2 all year, so it shares Lithuania's winter time and falls an hour behind in summer.
Did Lithuania ever use Central European Time?
Three times. From 1921 to 1939 the clocks stood an hour ahead of UTC, and the German occupation of 1941 to 1944 brought Central European Time again. The most recent spell was short: in 1998 and 1999 Lithuania ran on UTC+1 with summer time at UTC+2, before returning to UTC+2 in 2000.
Did Lithuania skip summer time from 2000 to 2002?
Yes. Coming off its two years on Central European Time, the country returned to UTC+2 in 2000 and held it all year, with no spring or autumn change, until the end of 2002. The seasonal change resumed in 2003 and has followed the European Union's dates since.
Will Lithuania stop changing the clocks?
Not yet. The Seimas voted in 2017 to ask the European Union to reconsider summer time, and the European Parliament agreed on 26 March 2019 to end seasonal changes, leaving each state to pick its permanent time. The Council of the European Union has never approved that directive. Until it does, Lithuania keeps moving its clocks in March and October with the rest of the Union.
What is the time difference between Lithuania and London?
Two hours in every season. The United Kingdom and Lithuania move their clocks at the same instant, 01:00 UTC on the last Sunday of March and of October, so the gap holds steady: noon in London is 14:00 in Vilnius in January and in July alike.
