Lithuania has 14 public holidays with a day off in 2026 and again in 2027, ten of them on a weekday in 2026 and nine in 2027. Christmas takes three days in a row, from Christmas Eve (Kūčios) to 26 December, and All Saints' Day is followed at once by All Souls' Day (Vėlinės), so November opens with two days off.
The list is Article 123 of the Labour Code. It counts two holidays that never cost a working day, Mother's Day on the first Sunday in May and Father's Day on the first Sunday in June, and Easter Sunday sits on it for the same reason beside Easter Monday, with Easter dated by the Western church calendar.
Two days mark independence, one for each time it was declared: 16 February, for the Act of Independence of 1918, and 11 March, for the re-establishment of the state in 1990. A third state day, 6 July, goes back to 1253 and the coronation of Mindaugas.

No replacement day is given for a holiday that falls on a weekend. In 2027 that costs five. Easter Sunday, 1 May, 15 August and both days of Christmas all land on a Saturday or a Sunday that year, and the working week around them is unchanged.
Beyond the days off, a separate law on commemorative days (atmintinos dienos) lists a further 71, none of them a day off in its own right. They include 13 January, the Day of the Defenders of Freedom, and 29 March, the day Lithuania joined NATO. Folk and church feasts such as Užgavėnės, the Shrovetide carnival, and Trys karaliai on 6 January are kept by custom without a day off.

Questions about public holidays in Lithuania
How many public holidays does Lithuania have in 2026?
Fourteen with a day off. Ten fall on a weekday and four on a weekend: Easter Sunday on 5 April, the Assumption on Saturday 15 August, All Saints' Day on Sunday 1 November and the second day of Christmas on Saturday 26 December. The Labour Code adds Mother's Day and Father's Day, which fall on Sunday 3 May and Sunday 7 June in 2026 and give no extra day off.
Is Christmas Eve a day off in Lithuania?
Yes. Kūčios, on 24 December, is on the Labour Code list, so Christmas runs to three days off. In 2026 Christmas Eve is a Thursday and the break lasts from Thursday 24 December to Sunday 27 December. In 2027 it is a Friday. Both Christmas days then fall on the weekend.
Are Mother's Day and Father's Day public holidays in Lithuania?
They are, and the law fixes both to a Sunday: the first Sunday in May and the first Sunday in June. In 2026 that is 3 May and 7 June, in 2027 2 May and 6 June. Because both always fall on a rest day, neither takes a working day, and neither adds to the count of days off.
Why does Lithuania have two independence days?
Independence was declared twice. On 16 February 1918 the Council of Lithuania adopted the Act of Independence, which proclaimed a democratic republic; the state it created lasted until the Soviet occupation of the Second World War. On 11 March 1990 the Supreme Soviet of the Lithuanian SSR proclaimed the Act of the Re-Establishment of the State of Lithuania. Both dates are days off, and on 16 February the state flag must be raised on every designated building.

What is Joninės, and is 24 June a day off in Lithuania?
It is a day off every year. Joninės is Midsummer, named after St John, and the law gives it a second name, Rasos, the Day of Dew, from the pagan feast it grew out of. Much of how the day is kept still follows pagan tradition. In 2026 it falls on a Wednesday and in 2027 on a Thursday, so Friday 25 June 2027 is a single day of leave from a four-day break.
Does a public holiday on a weekend move to a weekday in Lithuania?
No. Neither the Labour Code list nor the calendars for 2026 and 2027 carry a replacement day. The result shows in 2027, when 1 May is a Saturday, 15 August a Sunday and Christmas falls on a Saturday and Sunday: five of the fourteen holidays, Easter Sunday included, pass without a weekday off.
