Croatia has 14 public holidays in 2026 and again in 2027, and the count includes a day that is always a Sunday: the law lists Easter and Easter Monday together as days off. Nothing is moved when a holiday meets a weekend. Article 4 of the holidays act says a holiday falling on a Sunday is not carried into the next day, so 2026 keeps nine holidays on weekdays and 2027, with Christmas on a Saturday and St Stephen's Day on a Sunday, only eight.

The calendar in force dates from a law passed in November 2019 that took effect on 1 January 2020. It restored 30 May as Statehood Day, turned 25 June and 8 October into working memorial days, and added 18 November, the day of remembrance for the victims of the Homeland War and of Vukovar and Škabrnje, as a new day off.

A third article gives believers of other calendars a paid day of their own. Christians who keep Christmas on 7 January may take that day off, and those who keep the Julian Easter may take its Monday. Muslims choose one day each for Ramadan Bayram and Kurban Bayram, and Jews one each for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.

The act keeps a separate list of 12 memorial days (spomendani), all of them working days. They run from the unification of Međimurje with Croatia on 9 January to the Day of the Croatian Parliament on 8 October, and include 25 June, Independence Day, which was a day off until 2019. The list was last amended in April 2025, with effect from 1 May 2025.

Some days off are local custom, not law. Split stops early for St Domnius on 7 May and Dubrovnik for St Blaise on 3 February, many towns hold carnival on Shrove Tuesday, and businesses customarily shut early on Good Friday, Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve. Article 6 lets the government decide which public bodies and others must work on a holiday.

Questions about public holidays in Croatia

How many public holidays does Croatia have in 2026?

Fourteen, the same as in 2027. Five of the 2026 days fall on a weekend: Easter Sunday on 5 April, Statehood Day on Saturday 30 May, the Assumption on Saturday 15 August, All Saints' Day on Sunday 1 November and St Stephen's Day on Saturday 26 December. That leaves nine holidays on weekdays.

Does Croatia give a replacement day when a holiday falls on a weekend?

No. Article 4 of the holidays act says that a holiday falling on a Sunday is not carried over to the next day, and no provision moves a Saturday holiday either. The cost shows in 2027: Christmas Day falls on Saturday 25 December and St Stephen's Day on Sunday 26 December, and Monday 27 December is an ordinary working day.

Why is Statehood Day on 30 May?

Because the first multi-party Croatian Parliament convened on 30 May 1990. The date was Statehood Day from 1990, until the holiday moved to 25 June in 2002, the anniversary of the 1991 independence decisions, and 30 May became a working memorial day. The 2019 law reversed that from 2020: 30 May is again Statehood Day and a day off, and 25 June is a memorial day without one.

Is Orthodox Christmas a day off in Croatia?

For those who celebrate it. The holidays act gives Christians who keep Christmas on 7 January the right not to work that day, and those who follow the Julian Easter the right to its Monday, 13 April in 2026. The day is paid. Everyone else works as usual, so 7 January is not in the national calendar above.

What are the long weekends in Croatia in 2026?

Four need no leave: Easter from Saturday 4 to Monday 6 April, Labour Day on Friday 1 May, Anti-Fascist Struggle Day on Monday 22 June, and Christmas on Friday 25 December running into the weekend. Single days of leave make three more, on Friday 2 January, Monday 5 January and Friday 5 June, the day after Corpus Christi.

When is Corpus Christi in Croatia in 2027?

On Thursday 27 May, 60 days after Easter Sunday on 28 March. Taking Friday 28 May as leave gives four days in a row, ending on Sunday 30 May, which is Statehood Day. Because the law moves no holiday off a Sunday, that is the only way the two days combine in 2027. In 2026 Corpus Christi fell on 4 June.

Do businesses close on Good Friday in Croatia?

Only early. Good Friday is not a public holiday, and neither are Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve, but businesses customarily shut before the usual hour on all three, sometimes as early as noon. The Easter days off come afterwards, on the Sunday and the Monday, which both appear in the act.

Why did 25 June stop being a day off in Croatia?

The 2019 holidays act made it a memorial day from 2020. Independence Day on 25 June marks the Constitutional Decision on the Sovereignty and Independence of the Republic of Croatia and the declaration of 1991. It was a day off until 2019, from 2002 under the name Statehood Day, and the law gave that name back to 30 May.
