Slovenia has 13 work-free public holidays in 2026 and again in 2027, and four of them come in pairs: New Year takes 1 and 2 January, and Labour Day takes 1 and 2 May. The calendar also lists Easter Sunday and Whit Sunday as work-free days, but both always fall on a Sunday and add no day off. In 2026 six of the 13 fall on a weekend, among them Prešeren Day and 1 November, so only seven shorten a working week.
The law keeps two lists. State holidays (državni prazniki) are the days of the state itself: Prešeren Day for culture, the uprising of 1941, Statehood Day and Independence and Unity Day for 1990 and 1991. Work-free days (dela prosti dnevi) that are not state holidays are church feasts, closed like a Sunday but with no official ceremony. One of them is Reformation Day on 31 October, a Protestant feast in a country where fewer than 1% described themselves as Protestant in 2002, kept because standard Slovene and Slovene literature began with the Reformation.
Several state holidays carry no day off. The Integration of Primorska into the Homeland on 15 September, Slovenian Sports Day on 23 September and Rudolf Maister Day on 23 November are among them: the flag may be flown, and they are ordinary working days.

The second of January has changed status twice. It was work-free from 1955 until May 2012, when the National Assembly passed the Public Finance Balance Act and made it a working day, and a vote in parliament restored it in 2017.
Several holidays changed status around independence. Christmas returned in 1991 after being abolished in 1953, the Assumption and Reformation Day became days off in 1992, and Insurrection Day on 22 July, which had been work-free, stopped being a day off in 1991.
The act on the coat of arms, flag and anthem requires state and municipal buildings to fly the flag on 8 February, 27 April, 1 and 2 May, 25 June and 26 December. The national holidays without a day off were declared after that act was adopted in 1994, and on them the flag may be flown.
Common questions
Questions about public holidays in Slovenia
How many public holidays does Slovenia have in 2026?
Thirteen work-free days. The law lists nine state holidays with a day off and six church feasts, but two of those feasts, Easter Sunday and Whit Sunday, always fall on a Sunday. In 2026 six of the 13 land on a weekend: 8 February, 2 May, 15 August, 31 October, 1 November and 26 December.
Why does Slovenia have two days off at New Year and on May Day?
Both holidays are defined as two days in the law: 1 and 2 January, and 1 and 2 May. May Day has been work-free since 1949. The second of January was cut in May 2012 by the Public Finance Balance Act, an austerity measure, and put back in 2017.
Why is Reformation Day a public holiday in Slovenia?
Because the written language is a product of the Reformation. Primož Trubar, a Lutheran preacher, wrote the first Slovene books, Abecednik and Katekizem, in the 16th century, and his circle laid the ground for standard Slovene. Protestantism itself was suppressed in the Counter-Reformation and fewer than 1% of Slovenians gave it as their faith in 2002. 31 October has been a day off since 1992.
What is the difference between Statehood Day and Independence and Unity Day?
They mark two steps. Independence and Unity Day, 26 December, is the announcement in 1990 of the plebiscite result: 88.5% voted for an independent and sovereign Slovenia. Statehood Day, 25 June, is the day in 1991 when parliament adopted the Declaration of Independence and began taking over federal powers. Both are state holidays with a day off.
What are the long weekends in Slovenia in 2026?
New Year's pair runs from Thursday 1 January to Sunday 4 January. Easter Monday gives Saturday 4 to Monday 6 April, and the Day of Uprising Against Occupation gives Saturday 25 to Monday 27 April. May Day makes Friday 1 to Sunday 3 May, and Christmas on a Friday starts three days off to 27 December. One day of leave on Friday 26 June turns Statehood Day into four days.
Is Prešeren Day a day off in Slovenia?
Yes. 8 February is the Slovenian cultural holiday, the anniversary of France Prešeren's death in 1849, and a day off since 1991. Prešeren wrote Zdravljica, The Toast, in 1844, and it is now the national anthem. In 2026 the day falls on a Sunday; in 2027 it is a Monday and gives a three-day weekend.
Which Slovenian national holidays are working days?
Several state holidays commemorate events or people without closing workplaces: the Integration of Primorska into the Homeland on 15 September, Slovenian Sports Day on 23 September and Rudolf Maister Day on 23 November among them. Primož Trubar Day on 8 June, the Unification of Prekmurje Slovenes on 17 August, Sovereignty Day on 25 October and Science Day on 10 November belong to the same group. On these days the flag may be flown on public and private buildings, but work goes on as on any other weekday.
Is Whit Sunday a public holiday in Slovenia?
It is on the list of work-free days, as binkoštna nedelja, fifty days after Easter, but it falls on a Sunday by definition and so never adds a day off. The 2026 date was 24 May; in 2027 Pentecost comes on 16 May.
