Luxembourg has 11 legal public holidays, fixed by the law of 25 April 2019, and a holiday that lands on a weekend still counts. An employee who would not have worked that day, a Saturday, a Sunday or a weekday off, is owed a compensatory day, as a rule within three months. Four of the eleven fall on a weekend in 2026 and five in 2027, so seven and six days off come on a weekday and the rest are given back as leave.
The 2019 law added Europe Day on 9 May, and the government's portal notes that no other member of the European Union keeps it as a public holiday. National Day on 23 June is the public celebration of the Grand Duke's birthday, held on that date since 1962 regardless of the reigning monarch's actual birthday.
Good Friday is a holiday for the banks only. They also close on the afternoon of Christmas Eve.

An employer may swap one of the legal holidays for a local or trade feast, provided each employee still gets eleven in the year, and collective agreements can add more. Some local days sit outside the law altogether. Kermesse Monday (Kiermes) in the city of Luxembourg is one, a Carnival day in the capital another.
A compensatory day is normally given within three months of the day after the holiday. Where the business cannot manage that, it may run to the end of the year, or to March for holidays in November and December. An employee who works on a holiday that was a normal working day is paid the day's usual wage, the hours worked and a 100% supplement on those hours.

How many public holidays does Luxembourg have?
Eleven, set by the law of 25 April 2019: New Year's Day, Easter Monday, 1 May, Europe Day, Ascension, Whit Monday, National Day, the Assumption, All Saints' Day and the two days of Christmas. The count holds in every year, because a holiday on a weekend or on a day off is replaced by a compensatory day.
What happens when a public holiday in Luxembourg falls on a weekend?
The employee gets a compensatory day off. The rule covers a Sunday and to any day the employee would not normally have worked, which for a Monday to Friday job means Saturday too. In 2026 that covers Europe Day and the Assumption, both Saturdays, All Saints' Day on a Sunday and St Stephen's Day on a Saturday. The day is due within three months, or later if the business cannot release the employee earlier.
Is Good Friday a public holiday in Luxembourg?
Only for the banks. It is not among the eleven legal holidays, so shops, public offices and most private employers work as usual; the banking collective agreement treats it as a legal holiday for bank staff. In 2026 it fell on 3 April and in 2027 it falls on 26 March. Easter Monday is the legal day off for everyone.
Why is National Day on 23 June?
The day marks the Grand Duke's birthday, and it once moved with the monarch. Grand Duke Jean was born on 5 January, a poor date for an outdoor celebration, so from 1962 it was fixed on 23 June, his name day. The date stayed after his reign ended in 2000 and is kept regardless of when the reigning Grand Duke was born. In 2026 it falls on a Tuesday, which makes Monday 22 June a bridge day.
Why is Europe Day a public holiday in Luxembourg?
The law of 25 April 2019 made 9 May a legal holiday, taking the total to eleven. The government's own portal describes Luxembourg as the only member state of the European Union to have done so. In both 2026 and 2027 the date falls on a weekend, a Saturday and then a Sunday, so employees receive it as a compensatory day.
What are the long weekends in Luxembourg in 2026?
Easter gives Saturday 4 to Monday 6 April, 1 May on a Friday makes a three-day weekend, and Whit Monday closes 23 to 25 May. Christmas Day on a Friday runs into the weekend. A day of leave adds more: Friday 2 January after New Year, Friday 15 May after Ascension and Monday 22 June before National Day.
Is Christmas Eve a day off in Luxembourg?
Not by law. The afternoon of 24 December is a bank holiday, and civil servants have the same half day off, together with a half day on the Tuesday after Whit Monday. Everyone else works as normal unless a collective agreement or the employer grants the time.
How is work on a public holiday paid in Luxembourg?
An employee who works on a holiday that falls on a normal working day receives the usual wage for the day, pay for the hours worked and a supplement of 100% on those hours. Work on a Sunday holiday adds a further 70% for Sunday work and a compensatory day. The holiday supplements are free of income tax.
