Liechtenstein adopted Central European Time in 1894. It first put its clocks forward in 1941 and 1942, in line with Switzerland, and then kept standard time all year round for almost four decades. Austria brought summer time back in 1980 and Switzerland did not, so for that one summer Vaduz ran an hour behind its eastern neighbour. Switzerland adopted summer time in 1981, although 52.1% of Swiss voters had rejected it in a referendum in 1978, and Liechtenstein changed with it. Since 1996 the Swiss dates have followed the rules of the European Union.

Why was Liechtenstein an hour behind Austria in 1980?
Austria reintroduced summer time in 1980. Switzerland held out one more year, and Liechtenstein keeps Swiss time, so from spring to autumn 1980 a clock in Vaduz showed an hour less than one across the border in Austria. The gap closed in 1981, when Switzerland and Liechtenstein adopted summer time too. Switzerland was then the second last country in Europe to do so, ahead only of Yugoslavia.
When did Liechtenstein start using summer time?
In 1941, in step with Switzerland, for two wartime summers. After 1942 the clocks stayed on standard time until 1981, when Switzerland adopted summer time despite a 1978 referendum in which 52.1% of voters had said no. Liechtenstein followed.
