Liechtenstein has 13 public holidays set by law, and all but one follow the Catholic church year. The exception is Labour Day on 1 May, a holiday since 1970. The National Day falls on the Assumption, 15 August, and two more feasts of Mary, 8 September and 8 December, are days off as well. In 2026 ten of the 13 fall on a weekday; in 2027, nine.

The list is in Article 18 of the Arbeitsgesetz of 1966, which puts each holiday on the same footing as a Sunday, and Article 19 of the constitution protects them as public days of rest. Easter Sunday and Whit Sunday are not on it.

Around the law sits a second tier. Candlemas on 2 February and St Joseph's Day on 19 March are paid days off only where a collective agreement grants them. Banks close on five further days, Good Friday among them, and the national administration gives its own staff those days off too.

The authorities have regulated holidays in Liechtenstein since the Landsbrauch of 1667 and the police ordinance of 1732, which demanded that the days be kept holy and set out when work was banned. From 1789 the government tried to cut their number. A reduction of 45 to 47 days was sought in 1801; after petitions from the clergy and the Landammänner only 13 to 15 were abolished. Further cuts followed in 1810, 1815 and 1868.

Until the 1960s the parish priest could lift the ban on work on a holiday when the weather left farmers no choice.

The national administration sets extra days off for its own staff. In 2026 these are the full days of 2 January, Shrove Tuesday, Good Friday, 24 December and 31 December, and two bridge days, Friday 15 May and Friday 5 June, after Ascension and Corpus Christi. They bind the administration, not other employers.

How many public holidays does Liechtenstein have?

Thirteen, all listed in Article 18 of the Arbeitsgesetz and equal to a Sunday: New Year, Epiphany, Easter Monday, 1 May, Ascension, Whit Monday, Corpus Christi, 15 August, 8 September, 1 November, 8 December, Christmas Day and St Stephen's Day. They apply across the whole country. In 2026, 15 August and 26 December fall on a Saturday and 1 November on a Sunday; in 2027 four of the 13 land on a weekend.

Is Good Friday a public holiday in Liechtenstein?

No. Good Friday, 3 April 2026 and 26 March 2027, is a bank holiday: banks close and the national administration gives its staff the day off, but the Arbeitsgesetz does not list it. The statutory Easter holiday is Easter Monday, 6 April 2026 and 29 March 2027.

Are Candlemas and St Joseph's Day days off in Liechtenstein?

For some workers. Neither 2 February nor 19 March is among the 13 holidays in the law, but collective agreements in several trades make them paid days off, and the national administration keeps both. St Joseph's Day doubles as Father's Day. In 2026 Candlemas falls on a Monday and St Joseph's Day on a Thursday; in 2027 on a Tuesday and a Friday.

What are the bank holidays in Liechtenstein?

Five days on which banks close although the law does not make them holidays: Berchtoldstag on 2 January, Shrove Tuesday, Good Friday, Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve. In 2026 they fall on Friday 2 January, Tuesday 17 February, Friday 3 April, Thursday 24 December and Thursday 31 December. In 2027 the first of them falls on a Saturday.

Why is the National Day on 15 August?

The National Day has been held since 1940 on the feast of the Assumption of Mary, so one date carries both, and the law names the holiday by the church feast. In 2026, 15 August is a Saturday and in 2027 a Sunday.

What are the long weekends in Liechtenstein in 2026?

Easter gives Saturday 4 to Monday 6 April, and Whit Monday gives Saturday 23 to Monday 25 May. Labour Day on Friday 1 May and Christmas Day on Friday 25 December each start a three-day run. Ascension on Thursday 14 May and Corpus Christi on Thursday 4 June each turn into four days with one Friday taken as leave, the same Fridays the administration gives its staff.

Has Liechtenstein always had 13 holidays?

No, it once had many more. Rules on keeping holidays date back to the Landsbrauch of 1667. In the spirit of Josephinism the authorities set out to reduce them from 1789, and in 1801 sought to remove 45 to 47 days; the clergy and the Landammänner objected, and 13 to 15 went. More were dropped in 1810, 1815 and 1868. The one addition since is Labour Day, in 1970.
