The official calendar of Kosovo lists eleven holidays, and it gives days off to three faiths at once. Catholic Christmas on 25 December and Orthodox Christmas on 7 January are both kept, so are Catholic and Orthodox Easter, each with its Monday, and so is the first day of each Bajram, Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. The 2024 census counted 93.5% of the population as Sunni Muslims, 2.3% as Eastern Orthodox and 1.8% as Roman Catholics.

The two Easters seldom fall together. In 2026 Orthodox Easter Monday came a week after the Catholic one, on 13 April against 6 April; in 2027 the gap is five weeks, 29 March against 3 May. The Bajrams follow the lunar calendar. The central bank's holiday schedule warns that the dates of Eid and Easter may change, and timeanddate marks both Bajrams in 2027 as tentative.

The civic days are recent: Independence Day for the declaration of 17 February 2008, Constitution Day on 9 April and Europe Day on 9 May. When a holiday falls on a weekend, a Monday is given off instead.

When a holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, timeanddate lists the following Monday as a day off. That gave Monday 11 May 2026 for Europe Day, and in 2027 it gives four: 4 January, 3 May, 10 May and 27 December. No Monday is added for the two Easter Sundays, which already come with one. In 2027 Labour Day and Orthodox Easter share their Monday, 3 May, so the weekend of 1 and 2 May gains one day off rather than two.

Timeanddate also marks days of Kosovo's communities that are working days: the Ashkali on 15 February, the Roma on 8 April, the Turks on 23 April, the Gorani on 6 May, the Bosniaks on 28 September and the Albanians on 28 November. Questions about public holidays in Kosovo

How many public holidays does Kosovo have?

Eleven on the official calendar, several of them longer than a day. New Year takes 1 and 2 January, and both Easters take a Sunday and a Monday. In 2026 that came to days off on 15 dates, two of them Easter Sundays. Europe Day fell on a Saturday, and Monday 11 May was off in its place.

Does Kosovo celebrate Christmas twice?

Yes, and both are days off. Catholic Christmas falls on 25 December and Orthodox Christmas on 7 January, and the official calendar lists them as separate holidays, Krishtlindjet Katolike and Krishtlindjet Ortodokse. Both are general days off, whatever a person's faith. Kosovo's Catholics and Orthodox together made up about 4% of the population in the 2024 census.

When is Easter in Kosovo in 2027?

Twice. Catholic Easter Sunday falls on 28 March 2027 and its Monday on 29 March. Orthodox Easter follows five weeks later, on Sunday 2 May, with Monday 3 May off. That Monday also stands in for Labour Day, which falls on Saturday 1 May, so the long weekend runs from Saturday to Monday.

Are Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha days off in Kosovo?

The first day of each is. Kosovo calls them Bajrami i Madh and Bajrami i Vogël, and only the first day of either appears on the official list. In 2026 they fell on Friday 20 March and Wednesday 27 May. For 2027 timeanddate gives 10 March and 17 May, both marked tentative, because the dates depend on the lunar calendar.

What happens when a holiday in Kosovo falls on a weekend?

The next Monday is off. Timeanddate lists it that way for every weekend holiday in the two years on file: Europe Day gave Monday 11 May 2026, and in 2027 New Year's second day, Labour Day, Europe Day and Catholic Christmas all land on a weekend and move to 4 January, 3 May, 10 May and 27 December. The Easter Sundays get no extra day, since their Monday is already a holiday.

Why is Europe Day a public holiday in Kosovo?

Kosovo keeps 9 May as Europe Day although it is not a member of the European Union. The EU counts it as a potential candidate for membership, and 22 of the 27 member states recognise its independence. Kosovo also uses the euro as its official currency. The day off is a full one: in 2026 it fell on a Saturday and Monday 11 May was given instead.

What are the long weekends in Kosovo in 2027?

New Year gives four days, Friday 1 January to Monday 4 January.
