Law 2429 of 1981 gives Türkiye fifteen and a half days of holiday a year, and eight of them belong to two feasts that follow the Islamic lunar calendar: the Ramadan Feast (Ramazan Bayramı), three and a half days, and the Sacrifice Feast (Kurban Bayramı), four and a half. Each begins at 13:00 on its eve, the arefe, so the feast opens with a free afternoon. The lunar year runs about eleven days short of the Gregorian one, and the feasts come earlier every year: the Ramadan Feast began on 20 March in 2026 and the calendar of religious days of the Presidency of Religious Affairs (Diyanet) puts it on 9 March in 2027.
The fixed dates mark the founding of the state: 23 April for the first sitting of the Grand National Assembly in Ankara in 1920, 19 May for Atatürk's landing at Samsun in 1919, 30 August for the battle at Dumlupınar in 1922 and 29 October for the republic of 1923. The law ranks 29 October apart as the one National Holiday. It starts at 13:00 the day before, it is the only day on which ceremonies are held on behalf of the state at home and abroad, and it is the one day private workplaces must shut.
In 2026 the calendar has 14 days off, four of them on a Saturday or Sunday. 2027 has 13, because the fourth day of the Sacrifice Feast lands on 19 May, which is a holiday already.

Law 2429 holds no rule that moves a holiday falling on a weekend, and none is replaced. In 2026 that covers the second and third days of the Ramadan Feast, the last day of the Sacrifice Feast and Victory Day on Sunday 30 August. Article 3 sets the weekly rest on Sunday, at least 35 hours long and starting no later than 13:00 on Saturday.
Timeanddate lists Monday 25 May and Tuesday 26 May 2026 as holidays for public servants. With the Sacrifice Feast and the weekends on either side they made nine days off in the public sector, from 23 to 31 May. Neither day is in Law 2429.
The law of 1981 replaced Law 2739 of 1935. Two holidays have gone: İyd-i Millî on 24 July, kept from 1909 to 1934 for the Second Constitutional Era, and Freedom and Constitution Day on 27 May, kept from 1963 to 1981 for the coup of 1960. A temporary article made 31 December 1999 a full-day holiday, once.
10 November, Atatürk Commemoration Day, is marked as an observance and is a working day. Under the Human Rights Action Plan announced in 2021, staff in the public and private sectors and students may take leave for the religious holidays of their own faith.

How many public holidays does Türkiye have in 2026?
Fourteen full days, of which four fall on a weekend: 21 and 22 March in the Ramadan Feast, 30 May in the Sacrifice Feast and Victory Day on 30 August. On top come three afternoons off, on 19 March, 26 May and 28 October. The law itself counts fifteen and a half days, with the half days on each feast's eve and before Republic Day.
Does work stop on the arefe, the eve of a feast, in Türkiye?
Half of it. Law 2429 starts both religious feasts at 13:00 on the arefe, so the morning is worked and the afternoon is off. In 2026 the two eves were Thursday 19 March and Tuesday 26 May. The same half day comes before Republic Day, which begins at 13:00 on 28 October.
When is Kurban Bayramı in 2027?
From Sunday 16 May to Wednesday 19 May 2027, with the half day of the eve on Saturday 15 May, according to the calendar of religious days of the Presidency of Religious Affairs. The last day coincides with Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day, so 2027 loses a day off to the overlap, and the first falls on a Sunday.
On which dates does Ramazan Bayramı fall in 2027?
From Tuesday 9 March to Thursday 11 March 2027, after the eve on Monday 8 March, when work stops at 13:00. The dates come from the calendar of religious days kept by the Presidency of Religious Affairs, which fixes the lunar months in advance. A day of leave on Friday 12 March makes a five day break with the weekend.
Why is 29 October different from the other holidays in Türkiye?
It is the only day the law calls the National Holiday, Ulusal Bayram. It marks the proclamation of the republic in 1923, starts at 13:00 on 28 October, and is the only day on which ceremonies are held on behalf of the state inside and outside Türkiye. It is also the one day on which private workplaces are required to close.
Does Türkiye give a replacement day when a holiday falls on a weekend?
No. Law 2429 has no substitute rule, so a holiday on a Saturday or Sunday is not moved. In 2027 that happens to 1 May, a Saturday, and to 16 May, the first day of the Sacrifice Feast, a Sunday. The law does add one weekend clause: when a holiday ends on a Friday evening, the whole of the following Saturday is a holiday too.
What are the long weekends in Türkiye in 2026?
The Ramadan Feast ran Friday 20 March to Sunday 22 March, after a free Thursday afternoon, and 1 May fell on a Friday. The Sacrifice Feast took Wednesday 27 May to Saturday 30 May, and public servants had 25 and 26 May off as well, for nine days in a row. A single day of leave joins a holiday to a weekend on Friday 2 January, Friday 24 April, Monday 18 May and Friday 30 October.
What does the 15 July holiday in Türkiye commemorate?
Democracy and National Unity Day recalls the coup attempt of 15 July 2016 and the opposition to it. Law 6752 of 25 October 2016 added it to Law 2429, and it came into force on 29 October that year. It is a general holiday rather than a bayram, listed beside New Year's Day and 1 May.
