Slovakia first used summer time from 1916 to 1918, as part of Austria-Hungary, and again during the Second World War. Czechoslovakia brought it back in 1979: it started on the first weekend of April, moved to the last weekend of March in 1981, and ended on the last weekend of September. Since 1996 summer time has run to the last weekend of October, under European Union rules.
On 26 March 2019 the European Parliament voted to end the seasonal clock change from 2021, with each member state choosing to stay on summer or winter time for good. The Council of the European Union has not approved it, so the clocks still change twice a year.
