Slovakia has 11 public holidays with a day off in 2026 and 13 in 2027. The difference is the government's third consolidation package, passed to cut the budget deficit: it made 8 May and 15 September working days for 2026 only, and ended the day off on 17 November for good.

Slovak law keeps two lists that overlap without matching. State holidays (štátne sviatky) mark events in the history of the state, such as independence on 1 January 1993 and the Slovak National Uprising of 1944. Days of rest (dni pracovného pokoja) are the days work stops, most of them church feasts: Epiphany, Easter, All Saints' Day and Christmas. Three state holidays, 1 September, 28 October and 17 November, carry no day off at all.

The same package lifted the ban on trading on most public holidays. Shops now have to close only over Christmas and Easter.

28 October, the founding of the Czecho-Slovak state in 1918, became a state holiday in 2021 without a day off. It has stayed a working day since, which is why it appears in neither calendar above.

The law also names 23 remembrance days (pamätné dni), from the Day of the Victims of the COVID-19 Pandemic on 6 March to the anniversary of Slovakia becoming a church province of its own on 30 December. All of them are working days.

Questions about public holidays in Slovakia

How many days off does Slovakia have in 2026?

Eleven. Four holidays that were days off until recently are working days in 2026: 1 September since 2024, 17 November for good under the third consolidation package, and 8 May and 15 September for 2026 only under the same package. Of the eleven that remain, four fall on a weekend: 5 July, 29 August, 1 November and 26 December.

Is 8 May a day off in Slovakia?

Not in 2026. Day of Victory over Fascism stays a public holiday, but the consolidation package suspended its day off for 2026, together with that of 15 September. Both return as days off in 2027. That year 8 May falls on a Saturday, so the restored day off does not shorten a Monday to Friday week.

Does Slovakia still have a day off on 17 November?

It is still a state holiday, Struggle for Freedom and Democracy Day, remembering the student protests of 1939 and 1989. It is no longer a day off, and unlike 8 May and 15 September the change is permanent: shops, offices and factories open as they would on any other weekday.

Are shops open on public holidays in Slovakia?

On most of them. The third consolidation package lifted the ban on trading on public holidays, which had kept shops shut on every day off apart from a few exceptions. The ban now applies only over Christmas and Easter, so shops may open on 1 May, 1 November and the other days off.

When is Easter in Slovakia in 2027?

Good Friday falls on 26 March 2027 and Easter Monday on 29 March. Both are days off, so Easter gives four days in a row, Friday to Monday. In 2026 the same four days ran from 3 to 6 April.

What are the long weekends in Slovakia in 2026?

Three come without taking leave. Easter runs from Friday 3 April to Monday 6 April, Labour Day on Friday 1 May makes a three-day weekend, and Christmas Eve on a Thursday starts four days off that end on Sunday 27 December. Two more need a single day of leave: Friday 2 January joins New Year's Day to the weekend, and Monday 5 January joins the weekend to Epiphany.

Why is 28 October not a day off in Slovakia?

It is a state holiday, the Day of the Establishment of an Independent Czecho-Slovak State, marking 28 October 1918. It was added to the law in 2021 as a holiday without a day off, and it has stayed a working day since. It is kept as the anniversary of Czechoslovak independence, the state Slovakia belonged to until 1993.

What is the difference between a state holiday and a day of rest in Slovakia?

Act No. 241/1993 keeps them as separate lists. State holidays mark the history of the state: independence, Cyril and Methodius, the Slovak National Uprising, the constitution, 1918 and 1989.
