The National Bank of Serbia lists 13 non-working days for 2026, nine of them on a weekday. Three holidays last two days each, New Year, Statehood Day and Labour Day, and the church feasts follow the Serbian Orthodox calendar: Christmas falls on 7 January and Easter is reckoned the Orthodox way, which in 2026 put it a week after Western Easter.

The Law on State and Other Holidays gives 12 days off in a year with no Sunday clash: 1 and 2 January, 7 January, 15 and 16 February, Good Friday through Easter Monday, 1 and 2 May and 11 November. When a state holiday lands on a Sunday, the first working day after it is free. That is why Statehood Day ran from Sunday 15 February to Tuesday 17 February in 2026.

Victory Day on 9 May is a state holiday that is worked, and four more days are marked in the law without a break from work. Members of other faiths have a separate right to stay off work on their own feasts.

The law's Easter runs from Good Friday to the second day of Easter, so Holy Saturday is a day off as well. The National Bank of Serbia lists 10, 11, 12 and 13 April 2026 as one block, Friday to Monday.

In 2027 Orthodox Easter Sunday falls on 2 May, the second day of Labour Day, and Holy Saturday on 1 May, its first. The law frees the first working day after a state holiday that lands on a Sunday, and Monday 3 May is Easter Monday, so the free day is Tuesday 4 May. That makes a run of five days off, from Friday 30 April to Tuesday 4 May.

Five days are worked under the law: Saint Sava's Day, also the Day of Spirituality, on 27 January; the day of remembrance for the victims of the Holocaust, genocide and fascism in the Second World War on 22 April; Victory Day on 9 May; Vidovdan, for the Battle of Kosovo, on 28 June; and 21 October, for the Serbian victims of the Second World War and the civilians shot by German occupation forces in Kragujevac in October 1941. 27 January and 28 June are the Gregorian dates of 14 January and 15 June in the Julian calendar.

Questions about public holidays in Serbia

How many public holidays does Serbia have in 2026?

The National Bank of Serbia lists 13 non-working days for 2026. Nine fall on a weekday: 1, 2 and 7 January, 16 and 17 February, Good Friday on 10 April, Easter Monday on 13 April, 1 May and 11 November. The other four are Sunday 15 February, Holy Saturday on 11 April, Easter Sunday on 12 April and Saturday 2 May.

When is Orthodox Christmas in Serbia?

On 7 January, the date the Julian calendar of the Serbian Orthodox Church gives for Christmas. It fell on a Wednesday in 2026 and falls on Thursday 7 January 2027. 25 December is a working day for most of the country, though Catholic and other Christian employees are entitled to take the first day of their own Christmas off.

When is Easter in Serbia in 2027?

Orthodox Good Friday falls on 30 April 2027, Holy Saturday on 1 May, Easter Sunday on 2 May and Easter Monday on 3 May. That lands Easter on top of Labour Day, 1 and 2 May, and because the second day of Labour Day is a Sunday, Tuesday 4 May is free as well: five days off in a row. In 2026 Easter came earlier, from 10 to 13 April.

What does Statehood Day in Serbia commemorate?

Two events that fell on Sretenje, the feast of the Presentation. On that day in 1804 an assembly at Orašac raised the First Serbian Uprising, and in 1835 the first constitution of the Principality of Serbia was proclaimed and sworn at Kragujevac. The holiday lasts two days. In 2027 it falls on Monday 15 and Tuesday 16 February, which makes four days off from Saturday 13 February.

What happens when a Serbian holiday falls on a Sunday?

Article 3a of the holidays law makes the first following working day a day off, and it applies to state holidays: New Year, Statehood Day, Labour Day and Armistice Day. Christmas and Easter are church holidays and sit outside the rule. A Saturday earns nothing back, which is why 2 May 2026 and 2 January 2027 bring no substitute day.

Is Saint Sava's Day a day off in Serbia?

No. Saint Sava's Day on 27 January is a working holiday, celebrated as the Day of Spirituality. Saint Sava is the patron saint of Serbian schools, and schools mark the day, but offices and shops keep normal hours. Vidovdan on 28 June is worked in the same way.

Can people of other faiths in Serbia take their own religious holidays off?

Yes, under Article 4 of the holidays law. Orthodox employees may stay off on the first day of their krsna slava, the family patron saint's day. Catholic and other Christian employees may take the first day of Christmas and Good Friday to Easter Monday by their own calendar. Muslims have the first day of Ramazanski Bajram and of Kurbanski Bajram, and Jewish employees the first day of Yom Kippur. These are rights of the individual employee, and the rest of the country works.
