Article 139 of Romania's Labour Code names 17 public holidays without work, Easter Sunday and Whit Sunday among them. Set those two Sundays aside and 15 days off remain, but 2026 has only 14, because Whit Monday lands on 1 June, Children's Day, and the two holidays share one date. Eleven of the 2026 days fall between Monday and Friday; in 2027, with all 15 apart, only nine do.
Every movable holiday follows Orthodox Easter: Good Friday, the two Easter days, then the two days of Pentecost on the 50th and 51st days after it. Easter Sunday is 12 April in 2026 and 2 May in 2027, which puts Good Friday on 30 April and Labour Day on the Saturday in between. Members of other Christian churches may take these days on their own church's dates instead.
Two dates mark how the state was put together. 24 January recalls the union of Moldavia and Wallachia in 1859, and 1 December, the national day, the union of Transylvania, Bessarabia and Bukovina with the Kingdom of Romania in 1918. The saints' days sit on fixed dates: Epiphany and John the Baptist back to back in January, the Dormition on 15 August, and St Andrew, protector of Romania, on 30 November.

The list has lengthened over the past decade. 24 January became a day without work in 2016, 1 June in 2017 and Good Friday in 2018. A count of 2011 found 51 public holidays of every kind in Romanian law, covering about 14% of the year, with 15 of them non-working.
Article 139 moves no holiday that falls on a Saturday or Sunday, and 2027 has six such days besides the two Easter and Pentecost Sundays. What it provides instead concerns the public sector: by 15 January each year the government decides which working days next to a holiday are given off to staff paid from the state budget, and when the lost hours are made up.
Employees who belong to a legal religious denomination that is not Christian get two days off for each of three yearly feasts that denomination declares. The employer grants them on dates that are neither public holidays nor annual leave.
Many days are marked with no day off. Heroes' Day falls on Orthodox Ascension, 21 May in 2026 and 10 June in 2027, with ceremonies at war memorials such as the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Bucharest. 10 May is Monarchy Day, for the crowning of Carol I. Mărțișor on 1 March and Dragobete on 24 February are folk customs kept on working days.

How many public holidays does Romania have in 2026?
The Labour Code lists 17, and 14 of them bring a day off in 2026. Easter Sunday and Whit Sunday are Sundays by definition, and Whit Monday lands on 1 June, the same date as Children's Day, so the two share one day. Three more fall on a Saturday: 24 January, 15 August and 26 December. That leaves 11 holidays between Monday and Friday.
When is Orthodox Easter in Romania in 2027?
Easter Sunday falls on 2 May 2027. Good Friday is 30 April and Easter Monday 3 May, and Labour Day on Saturday 1 May sits between them, so four days run together with no leave. In 2026 the same holidays fell on 10, 12 and 13 April.
Do Catholics and Protestants in Romania get Easter off on the Western date?
Yes, if they belong to a legally recognised Christian denomination. Article 139 of the Labour Code lets such employees take Good Friday, the two Easter days and the two days of Pentecost on the dates their own church keeps them. Anyone who takes both sets, the Orthodox dates and their own, has to work the extra days back on a schedule the employer draws up.

In 2027 they separate: Children's Day falls on Tuesday 1 June and Whit Monday on 21 June, and a day of leave on Monday 31 May turns the first into a four-day break.
Is 8 December a public holiday in Romania?
No. Constitution Day on 8 December marks the referendum of 1991 that approved the Romanian Constitution, and it is observed as a working day. So are Flag Day on 26 June and National Anthem Day on 29 July, the date Deșteaptă-te, române! was first performed, in 1848 at Râmnicu Vâlcea.
