Public holidays in Moldova

Article 111 of the Labour Code lists 13 dates, Easter Sunday among them, carrying 14 holidays, because Victory Day and Europe Day share 9 May. Each locality adds its hram, the feast of its church. Nothing replaces a holiday lost to a weekend, and in 2026 three are: 8 March and Easter Sunday fall on a Sunday and 9 May on a Saturday.

The Labour Code keeps both reckonings. Christmas by the old style, Crăciunul pe stil vechi, takes 7 and 8 January, and Christmas by the new style, Crăciunul pe stil nou, takes 25 December. That makes three Christmas days off in one calendar year. In 2026 the January pair falls on a Wednesday and a Thursday and 25 December on a Friday.

Both. The code lists them as separate items on one date: Victory Day and the commemoration of the heroes who fell for the independence of the homeland, and Europe Day. Since they share the day, they give one day off between them, and in 2026 that day is a Saturday.

It is lost. No substitute weekday is given, and the code spells out the consequence for pay: staff paid by the hour or by the piece receive their average wage for a holiday only when it lands on a working day. The Government can move rest days for public institutions, and an employer can do the same after consulting staff, so any bridge day is set by a decision rather than by the calendar.

The hram is the feast of the saint a local church is dedicated to. The Labour Code makes it a non-working day in that locality only, on the date the municipal, town, commune or village council declares. It is the one holiday on the list without a national date.

Easter Sunday falls on 12 April 2026 and on 2 May 2027, dated by the church calendar. The code gives the first and second days of Easter off and adds Paștele Blajinilor, the Monday a week after Easter: 20 April 2026 and 10 May 2027. In 2027 Labour Day on Saturday 1 May runs straight into Easter, and the Easter Monday off follows on 3 May.

Only in continuous production, in services to the public and for urgent repairs, loading and unloading. Employees under 18 may not work on a holiday at all. People with severe disabilities and parents of children under four may work only with their written consent, and pregnant women only at their own written request, backed by a medical certificate.

In 2026, yes. Independence Day falls on Thursday 27 August and Romanian Language Day on Monday 31 August, so one day of leave on Friday 28 August gives five days in a row, Thursday to Monday. The two holidays sit four days apart every year, but the bridge needs a single day only when 27 August is a Thursday.
