Public holidays in Greece

Twelve national holidays. Ten fall on a weekday in 2026; the Dormition on 15 August and the Synaxis on 26 December both land on a Saturday and give no extra day. The count in the calendar above is higher because the provider also lists Easter Sunday and Pentecost Sunday, and lists 25 March twice.

Greece keeps the Orthodox Easter, and four national holidays hang on it, so all four move together from year to year. In 2026 Good Friday is 10 April and Easter Monday 13 April. In 2027 Easter is late, on 2 May, so Good Friday falls on 30 April, Clean Monday on 15 March and Whit Monday on 21 June.

Not on the day itself, most probably. It falls on Holy Saturday, and Law 4468/2017 moves a Labour Day that lands in Holy Week to another working day by ministerial decision. The Bank of Greece already leaves the day out of its 2027 list and notes that it is to be transferred. The new date had not been announced when these sources were read.

It is a national holiday and banks close. For a private employer it is an optional holiday under Royal Decree 748/1966: the employer decides whether staff work. The day commemorates the Greek refusal of the Italian ultimatum of 1940, known as Ohi, the No. In 2026 it falls on a Wednesday and in 2027 on a Thursday.

Six: 25 March, Easter Monday, 1 May, 15 August, 25 December and 26 December. On these days employment is prohibited. The list comes from Royal Decree 748/1966, extended by Law 4454/2018, and from Emergency Law 380/1968 as amended by Law 4468/2017. Clean Monday, Good Friday, Whit Monday, New Year and Epiphany are national holidays outside that list.

Nothing: Sunday is already a public holiday by law, and the day is not moved. 1 May is the exception. In 2022, when it fell on a Sunday, the banks closed on 2 May, the Monday, instead. In 2027 both 15 August and 26 December fall on a Sunday, and neither gets a replacement.

Five come without leave: Clean Monday gives Saturday 21 February to Monday 23 February, Easter runs four days from Friday 10 April to Monday 13 April, Labour Day makes Friday 1 May to Sunday 3 May, Whit Monday closes a weekend on Monday 1 June, and Christmas Day on a Friday starts three days to Sunday 27 December. Friday 2 January and Monday 5 January are the bridge days worth taking.

It is the anniversary of the Polytechnio, the student protests of 1973 against the junta of the colonels, which held power from 1967 to 1974. It is a holiday for education only, so schools and universities close while other workplaces open as usual.
