Article 30 of Georgia's Labour Code lists 18 holidays, Easter Sunday among them. Most follow the calendar of the Georgian Orthodox Church: Christmas falls on 7 January, Epiphany on 19 January, and Easter brings four days in a row, from Good Friday to Easter Monday, on the Orthodox date. A holiday that lands on a Saturday or Sunday is not moved to a weekday.
The secular days cluster in spring. Mother's Day on 3 March and International Women's Day five days later are both days off. 9 April remembers the anti-Soviet demonstration on Rustaveli Avenue in 1989, and 26 May the declaration of independence of 1918. Autumn holds only church feasts: the Assumption, the day of Svetitskhoveli Cathedral in Mtskheta and St George's Day on 23 November.
The government can add further days off by ordinance, and in 2026 it gave 5 and 6 January, so the New Year break ran on into Christmas. An employee may also agree with the employer to rest on other days instead of the holidays in the law.

The Labour Code has no rule moving a holiday off a weekend. In 2026 International Women's Day and Family Purity Day fell on Sundays and Holy Saturday and Victory Day on Saturdays; in 2027 the second New Year day, Holy Saturday, Victory Day and Mariamoba fall on weekends, and none of them is replaced.
Work on one of the holidays in Article 30 counts as overtime, paid on the terms of Article 27. Days off added by government ordinance are handled differently: the employer may ask for the work to be done on the employee's next rest day instead.
Common questions
Questions about public holidays in Georgia
How many public holidays does Georgia have?
Article 30 of the Labour Code lists 18, Easter Sunday among them, so 17 of them can fall on a working day. New Year takes two days and Easter four, from Good Friday to Easter Monday. Nothing is moved when a holiday falls on a weekend, and the government may declare extra days off by ordinance, as it did with 5 and 6 January 2026.
Why is Christmas on 7 January in Georgia?
Because the Georgian Orthodox Church keeps it then, and the law follows the church. Epiphany comes twelve days later, on 19 January, and Easter is set by the Orthodox reckoning too. 25 December does not appear in the law's list and is an ordinary working day.
When is Easter in Georgia in 2027?
Easter Sunday falls on 2 May 2027. The four Easter holidays run from Good Friday, 30 April, to Easter Monday, 3 May, with Holy Saturday on 1 May. In 2026 Easter came earlier: Good Friday on 10 April and Easter Monday on 13 April, joined to National Unity Day on 9 April for five days off in a row.
What does 9 April commemorate in Georgia?
The night of 9 April 1989, when the Soviet Army dispersed an anti-Soviet demonstration on Rustaveli Avenue in Tbilisi; 20 people died and hundreds were injured. The Labour Code calls it the day of national unity and of remembrance for those who died for the country's integrity, and also the day the Act of Restoring Independence of Georgia was adopted.
What are the long weekends in Georgia in 2026?
The longest ran from Thursday 1 January to Wednesday 7 January: New Year, the two days the government added and Christmas, seven days off. Then came Thursday 9 April to Monday 13 April, National Unity Day followed by the four Easter days. Epiphany on Monday 19 January, Mariamoba on Friday 28 August and St George's Day on Monday 23 November each make three days. A single day of leave on Monday 11 May links Victory Day on Saturday to St Andrew on Tuesday 12 May.
What happens when a holiday falls on a weekend in Georgia?
Nothing is added. The Labour Code gives no substitute day, so a holiday on a Saturday or Sunday is simply lost as a day off. In 2027 that happens to the second day of New Year, Holy Saturday, Victory Day on Sunday 9 May and Mariamoba on Saturday 28 August.
Does Georgia have two independence days?
Two dates carry the word. 26 May is Independence Day, marking the declaration of the Democratic Republic of Georgia by the National Council in 1918. 9 April, besides remembering the dead of 1989, is named in the law as the day the Act of Restoring Independence of Georgia was adopted. Both are days off.
Is a worker paid extra for working on a public holiday in Georgia?
Yes. Under Article 30 work on a holiday counts as overtime, compensated on the terms of Article 27. An employee may also agree with the employer, in the employment agreement, to take other rest days instead of the statutory holidays.
