The Faroe Islands run on Western European Time, level with UTC, and put the clocks forward an hour to Western European Summer Time from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October. A single zone covers the whole archipelago, Mykines included, although that westernmost island lies at 7°36′W, where the sun would put it about half an hour behind UTC. Tórshavn is therefore one hour behind Copenhagen in every season. Danish law has written that gap in since 1893, when it tied Denmark to 15°E and left the islands out.

Summer time reached the islands in 1981, a year after Denmark proper began using it. The Faroe Islands have never been part of the European Union, so following its dates was a Faroese decision. The change happens at the same instant as across the Union, 01:00 UTC, and the clocks in Tórshavn read 01:00 when they go forward in March and 02:00 when they go back in October. Before that the islands had kept Greenwich Mean Time without a summer hour since 1908, when they left a local mean time that ran 27 minutes behind Greenwich.

Common questions
Questions about the time in Faroe Islands
What time zone are the Faroe Islands in?
In winter the islands keep Western European Time, level with UTC; from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October they keep Western European Summer Time, an hour ahead. Every island keeps the same clock, so Klaksvík, Tórshavn and Mykines never differ. The time zone database files the islands under their own entry, Atlantic/Faroe, rather than under Copenhagen.
When do the clocks change in the Faroe Islands in 2026?
They went forward on Sunday 29 March 2026, from 01:00 to 02:00, and go back on Sunday 25 October, from 02:00 to 01:00. The 2027 dates are 28 March and 31 October. Because the switch is timed at 01:00 UTC, it happens an hour earlier by the Faroese clock than by the Danish one.
Why are the Faroe Islands an hour behind Denmark?
Denmark's time act of 1893 tied the country to the meridian 15°E, one hour ahead of Greenwich, but made an exception for the Faroe Islands. The islands moved to Greenwich Mean Time in 1908. When the Folketing replaced the 1893 act in March 2023 and set Danish standard time at UTC+1, it again left out the Faroe Islands and Greenland, so the hour's gap with Copenhagen remains, summer and winter.
Do the Faroe Islands have the same time as London?
Yes, all year. Both keep UTC+0 in winter and UTC+1 in summer, and both change at 01:00 UTC on the last Sunday in March and the last Sunday in October, so a clock in Tórshavn and one in London never disagree.
Is the time in the Faroe Islands the same as in Iceland?
Only in winter. Iceland stays on UTC+0 all year and has not used summer time since April 1968, while the Faroe Islands go forward an hour at the end of March. From then until the last Sunday in October, Tórshavn is one hour ahead of Reykjavík. Until 1968 Iceland had been on GMT minus one hour, set in 1908, the same year the Faroe Islands adopted Greenwich time.
Have the Faroe Islands always used summer time?
No. The islands kept Greenwich Mean Time all year from 1908 until 1981, when summer time was introduced. It was their own choice, since the islands never joined the European Union and its directives on summer time did not bind them; they simply adopted the same dates and the same changeover moment.
