Austrian law names 13 public holidays, and in 2026 ten of them fall on a weekday: 15 August and 26 December land on a Saturday and 1 November on a Sunday. In 2027 only nine do, with 1 May, 15 August, 25 December and 26 December all on a weekend. Apart from New Year, 1 May and National Day on 26 October, every one follows the church year, and eight of them are also guaranteed by the Concordat with the Holy See, signed on 5 June 1933 and in force from 1 May 1934.

Easter Sunday and Whit Sunday are not among the 13: the Arbeitsruhegesetz, the federal law on rest days, leaves both out because they always fall on a Sunday. The patron saints' days of the nine states, Saint Leopold in Vienna and Lower Austria or Saint Rupert in Salzburg, are holidays under state law, and often only schools and public offices close for them.

Good Friday is the day that changed most recently. Until 2019 it was a day off for members of the Protestant churches of the Augsburg and Helvetic Confessions, the Old Catholic Church and the Methodist Church. The 2019 amendment voided those rules. In their place every employee gained a personal holiday: one day of annual leave a year that can be fixed without the employer's consent.

Carinthia also keeps 10 October under state law, the anniversary of the plebiscite of October 1920 that settled its border with the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. Like the patron saints' days, it is a holiday under state law that often closes only schools, offices and public authorities.

Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve are working days by law, but many collective agreements make them wholly or partly free. In retail, work ends at 14:00 on 24 December and at 17:00 on 31 December, and later hours earn a 50% overtime premium. Members of the Jewish community have Yom Kippur off under a supplement to the general collective agreement dated 6 March 1953.

The count of 13 drops to 12 in a year when Ascension falls on 1 May. That last happened in 2008 and will not happen again until 2160.

How many public holidays does Austria have in 2026?

Thirteen under the Arbeitsruhegesetz, of which ten fall between Monday and Friday. Assumption on 15 August and St Stephen's Day on 26 December are Saturdays in 2026, and All Saints' Day on 1 November is a Sunday. Easter Sunday and Whit Sunday are church holidays too, but the law leaves them out because they always fall on a Sunday.

Is Good Friday a public holiday in Austria?

No. Until 2019 members of the Protestant churches of the Augsburg and Helvetic Confessions, the Old Catholic Church and the Methodist Church had the day off under the general collective agreement. The 2019 amendment to the Arbeitsruhegesetz made those special Good Friday rules void for everyone. Most states still restrict public events on the day, and Carinthia bans them outright.

What is the personal holiday in Austria?

Section 7a of the Arbeitsruhegesetz, added in 2019, lets every employee choose one day of annual leave a year without the employer's agreement. The date has to be given in writing at least three months ahead. If the employer then asks the employee to work, the leave day is kept and the day is paid twice.

Why is 26 October Austria's National Day?

On 26 October 1955, with the last occupation troops gone, the Federal Assembly passed the constitutional law by which Austria declared its permanent neutrality. In 2026 it falls on a Monday, the day after the clocks go back, and in 2027 on a Tuesday.

Are the patron saints' days holidays in Austria?

Only in part. Saint Joseph on 19 March, Saint Florian on 4 May, Saint Rupert on 24 September, Saint Martin on 11 November and Saint Leopold on 15 November are holidays under state law, each in its own states. They often apply only to schools, offices and public authorities, and the federal list of 13 days off does not include any of them.

Are shops open on 8 December in Austria?

Often, yes. The Immaculate Conception is a full public holiday, but when it falls on a weekday the law allows shops to employ staff under special conditions, and shops are allowed to open for Christmas shopping. In 2026 it is a Tuesday and in 2027 a Wednesday, so the exception applies in both years.

When are Easter and Whitsun in Austria in 2027?

Easter Monday falls on 29 March 2027, eight days earlier in the year than in 2026, when it was 6 April. Ascension follows on Thursday 6 May, Whit Monday on 17 May and Corpus Christi on Thursday 27 May, so all three fall within three weeks. The same days in 2026 were 14 May, 25 May and 4 June.
