Spain has 10 national public holidays in law. In 2026 All Saints and Constitution Day fall on a Sunday and drop off the national list, which leaves eight kept in every region, one of them on a Saturday; in 2027 all 10 are kept, three on a weekend. No worker gets exactly that list. The law allows 14 paid days off a year: 12 fixed between the state and the 17 autonomous communities and the cities of Ceuta and Melilla, and two chosen by each town hall.

Royal Decree 2001/1983 sorts the national days by origin. Two are civic, 12 October and 6 December. New Year, 1 May and Christmas come from the Workers' Statute. Four are owed under the 1979 agreement with the Holy See: Good Friday, the Assumption, All Saints and the Immaculate Conception. A fourth group, Maundy Thursday, Epiphany and a choice of San José or Santiago, may be swapped by each region for a day of its own.

The regional lists are sent to the Ministry of Labour before 30 September and published in the Boletín Oficial del Estado. The list for 2026 appeared on 28 October 2025.

When a national holiday falls on a Sunday, the rest day passes to the Monday after, unless a region replaces it with a day of its own. In 2026 both All Saints and Constitution Day fall on a Sunday. Monday 2 November is off in Andalusia, Aragon, Asturias, the Canary Islands, Castilla-La Mancha, Castile and León, Extremadura, Madrid and Navarre; Monday 7 December is off in ten of the 19 territories, which gives them four days in a row up to the Immaculate Conception on Tuesday 8 December.

Ceuta and Melilla have kept Eid al-Adha as a public holiday since 2010, the first non-Christian religious festival made official in Spain since the Reconquista. In 2026 both cities took Wednesday 27 May off for it, and Melilla also took Friday 20 March for Eid al-Fitr. Ceuta adds Our Lady of Africa on 5 August and its own day on 2 September.

The two local days are proposed by each town council and published in the regional or provincial gazette, so two towns in the same community can still differ by two days.

How many public holidays does Spain have in 2026?

Eight days are off in every region: 1 and 6 January, Good Friday on 3 April, 1 May, 15 August, 12 October, 8 December and Christmas Day, with 15 August on a Saturday. The law names 10 national days, but All Saints on 1 November and Constitution Day on 6 December fall on a Sunday in 2026, and most regions give the Monday after instead. With the region's own days and the town's two local ones, a worker gets up to 14 paid days off.

What happens when a holiday falls on a Sunday in Spain?
