Mongolia's Labour Law lists nine public holidays that together give 16 days off a year, and three of them are set by the lunar calendar, Bilgiin toolol, so they move from year to year. Tsagaan Sar, the lunar new year, takes the first three days of the first spring month: 18 to 20 February in 2026 and 7 to 9 February in 2027. Buddha's Birthday falls on the 15th day of the first summer month and Chinggis Khaan Day on the first day of the first winter month, which puts them on 31 May and 10 November in 2026 and on 20 May and 29 November in 2027.

Naadam is the longest break by law: six days, 10 to 15 July, for the national festival and the anniversary of the People's Revolution of 1921. In 2026 it runs from Friday 10 July to Wednesday 15 July. The law does not move a holiday that falls on a weekend to a weekday; instead the Government decides each year whether to transfer days off, as it did for Tsagaan Sar in 2025.

The provider behind these dates lists no Tsagaan Sar, Buddha's Birthday or Chinggis Khaan Day, files Children's Day under Naadam and leaves 10 July out of Naadam; all of these are corrected here from the Law on Public Holidays and Commemoration Days and the Labour Law of 2021. The 2026 lunar dates follow the official schedule cited by the Wikipedia list of holidays. The 2027 lunar dates are computed from the Mongolian lunar calendar published on the mathematics department site of McGill University; the Government confirms each year's lunar holidays, and they can change if it does not follow the computed calendar.

Transfers of days off are made by Government resolution. In February 2025 the Government moved three Tsagaan Sar days off to 3 to 5 March, to be worked back later in the year. For 2026 timeanddate lists Tuesday 17 February as a further Tsagaan Sar day off, worked back on Saturday 28 February; that transfer does not appear in the schedule cited by Wikipedia and is not counted in the calendar here.

Many more days are marked by law without a day off: Constitution Day on 13 January, Patriots' Day on 1 March, Mongolian Military Day on 18 March, Family Day on 15 May, Youth Day on 25 August, the Day of Remembrance for Victims of Political Repression on 10 September, Elders' Day on 1 October, Capital City Day on 29 October and Democracy and Human Rights Day on 10 December.

Common questions

Questions about public holidays in Mongolia

How many public holidays does Mongolia have?

Nine holidays giving 16 days off, under Article 97 of the Labour Law of 2021: New Year, three days of Tsagaan Sar, Women's Day, Buddha's Birthday, Children's Day, six days of Naadam, Chinggis Khaan Day, Republic Day and Independence Day. Some fall on a Saturday or Sunday in a given year: in 2026 Women's Day and Buddha's Birthday are both on a Sunday.

When is Tsagaan Sar in 2027?

The first day of the lunar year, shiniin negen, falls on Sunday 7 February 2027 by the Mongolian lunar calendar, so the three days off run from 7 to 9 February. The date comes from the published calendar computation; the Government confirms each year's dates. In 2026 Tsagaan Sar was kept from Wednesday 18 to Friday 20 February.

How long is the Naadam holiday?

Six days, from 10 to 15 July, under the Labour Law and the holidays law, both amended on this point in 2022 and 2023. The festival itself centres on 11 to 13 July, when the national wrestling, archery and horse races are held in Ulaanbaatar. In 2027 the holiday starts on Saturday 10 July and ends on Thursday 15 July.

Why does Chinggis Khaan Day move every year?

Because the law places it on the first day of the first winter month of the lunar calendar, the day Mongolians keep as Genghis Khan's symbolic birthday, and lunar months drift against the solar year. It fell on Tuesday 10 November 2026 and is computed for Monday 29 November 2027, later because lunar 2027 has an extra month.

Is Buddha's Birthday a day off in Mongolia?

Yes, since a law of 20 December 2019. It is kept on the 15th day of the first summer month of the lunar year, called Burkhan bagshiin Ikh düichin ödör: Sunday 31 May in 2026 and Thursday 20 May in 2027.

Is a holiday on a weekend moved to Monday in Mongolia?

Not automatically. Neither the holidays law nor the Labour Law moves a holiday that falls on a Saturday or Sunday. The Government can transfer days off by resolution, as it did in February 2025 when three Tsagaan Sar days off were moved to 3 to 5 March, and the transferred days are worked back later in the year.

Which days in Mongolia are marked but not days off?

The law lists commemoration days kept without a day off, among them Constitution Day on 13 January, Patriots' Day on 1 March, Mongolian Military Day on 18 March, State Flag Day on 10 July, which now falls inside the Naadam holiday, Youth Day on 25 August, the Day of Remembrance for Victims of Political Repression on 10 September and Capital City Day on 29 October.
