Macau has 20 public holidays in 2026 and 20 in 2027, set by Decree Law No. 60/2000, and they come from two calendars at once. Nine are Chinese festivals, from the three days of Lunar New Year to the winter solstice. Six come from the Catholic calendar, from Good Friday to Christmas Day. Two mark the founding of the People's Republic, one the establishment of the Macao Special Administrative Region on 20 December 1999, and New Year's Day and Labour Day complete the list.
Not every public holiday is a paid day off for every worker. Article 44 of Law No. 7/2008, the labour relations law, makes ten of the twenty obligatory holidays, which private employers must give: New Year's Day, the three days of Lunar New Year, Cheng Ming, Labour Day, the day after the Mid-Autumn Festival, National Day, Chong Yeung and Establishment Day. Government offices close on all twenty.
A day that falls on a weekend is not moved for everyone. The government gives its own employees a compensatory rest day under the civil service statute, and those days, like the afternoon exemptions on Lunar New Year's Eve and New Year's Eve, are left out of the calendars below.

Macau's government publishes three lists each year. The first is the twenty public holidays of Decree Law No. 60/2000. The second is the afternoons of Lunar New Year's Eve and New Year's Eve, which the Chief Executive grants to public employees as an exemption from work. The third is compensatory rest days for public employees, given under Article 79 of their statute when a holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday: six of them in 2026, from 6 April to 21 December, and six in 2027. Only the first list is shown above, because the other two apply to civil servants and not to the territory as a whole.
Private sector employees are entitled by law to the ten obligatory holidays, paid. The other ten, such as Good Friday, the Buddha's Birthday or Christmas Day, close government offices, but the labour law does not require private employers to give them.
Common questions
Questions about public holidays in Macau
How many public holidays does Macau have in 2026?
Twenty, under Decree Law No. 60/2000. Six of them fall on a weekend in 2026: the Saturday before Easter on 4 April, Cheng Ming on Sunday 5 April, the Buddha's Birthday on Sunday 24 May, the day after the Mid-Autumn Festival on Saturday 26 September, Chong Yeung on Sunday 18 October and Establishment Day on Sunday 20 December. Ten of the twenty are obligatory holidays that private employers must give.
Which public holidays must private employers in Macau give?
The ten obligatory holidays under Article 44 of Law No. 7/2008: New Year's Day, the first three days of the Lunar New Year, Cheng Ming, Labour Day, the day after the Mid-Autumn Festival, National Day on 1 October, Chong Yeung and Macao SAR Establishment Day on 20 December. The other ten public holidays close government offices but are not guaranteed days off in private employment.
Why does Macau have both Chinese and Catholic holidays?
The calendar keeps both traditions of the territory. The Chinese festivals follow the lunar calendar, while Good Friday, the Saturday before Easter, All Souls' Day, the Immaculate Conception and Christmas remain from four centuries of Portuguese administration and the Catholic diocese founded in 1576. National Day and Establishment Day were added for the People's Republic and the region created in 1999.
When is Lunar New Year in Macau in 2027?
The three public holidays fall on Saturday 6, Sunday 7 and Monday 8 February 2027. Because the first two land on a weekend, public employees receive compensatory rest days on Tuesday 9 and Wednesday 10 February, but that rule covers civil servants only. In 2026 the holidays ran from Tuesday 17 to Thursday 19 February.
Is a Macau holiday on a Sunday made up on a weekday?
For the public service, a compensatory rest day is given on a following working day under Article 79 of the civil service statute: in 2026 these include 6 and 7 April for the Saturday before Easter and Cheng Ming, and 21 December for Establishment Day. Private employment follows the labour relations law instead, and no general replacement day is set for the territory.
Is Christmas Eve a holiday in Macau?
Yes. Christmas Eve, 24 December, is one of the twenty public holidays, alongside Christmas Day on the 25th. In 2026 the pair fall on Thursday and Friday, so government offices close from 24 to 27 December. Neither is among the ten obligatory holidays, so private employers are not required to give them.
Why is the day after the Mid-Autumn Festival the holiday?
Macau keeps the day following Chong Chao, the Mid-Autumn Festival, as the public holiday, not the festival day itself, and it is one of the ten obligatory holidays. It falls on Saturday 26 September in 2026 and on Thursday 16 September in 2027.
