Kyrgyzstan keeps two kinds of holiday: days off and days that are only marked. The Labour Code of 23 January 2025 keeps Orthodox Christmas, Women's Day, Nooruz, Constitution Day, Victory Day, Independence Day and the two Muslim feasts, Orozo Ait and Kurman Ait, as non-working days, and turns Fatherland Defenders' Day, the Day of the People's April Revolution and the two Days of History and Commemoration of Ancestors into ordinary working days that remain on the calendar. New Year's Day and Labour Day are days off in every calendar on file as well.
The same code ended the practice of moving a holiday that falls on a weekend to the next working day, so a holiday on a Saturday or Sunday is not replaced. The government also approves a production calendar each year, which can add long breaks: for 2026 it gave seven days off from 1 to 7 January and nine from 1 to 9 May, according to the Caspian Post, with shortened working days on 30 April and 31 December.
The two Aits follow the Islamic lunar calendar, so their dates change from year to year. In 2026 Orozo Ait fell on Friday 20 March, the eve of Nooruz, and Kurman Ait on Wednesday 27 May; in 2027 they fall on Tuesday 9 March, the day after Women's Day, and on Sunday 16 May.

The calendars on file do not all follow the 2025 code. Timeanddate's list for 2026 still counts 23 February, 7 April and 7 and 8 November as public holidays and gives Monday 9 March off for Women's Day, while Office Holidays marks the first three as regular working days, as the code does, and adds 8 to 12 January 2026 to the New Year break.
For 2027 the government's production calendar is not among the sources. The statutory days are known; the bridging days that joined them into long breaks in January and May 2026 are decided year by year, and for 2027 only qppstudio lists any, from 2 to 6 January and from 2 to 8 May.
Common questions
Questions about public holidays in Kyrgyzstan
How many days off for public holidays does Kyrgyzstan have?
The Labour Code of 23 January 2025 names Orthodox Christmas, Women's Day, Nooruz, Constitution Day, Victory Day, Independence Day, Orozo Ait and Kurman Ait as non-working days, and New Year's Day and Labour Day are days off as well. The total in any year depends on the production calendar, which adds bridging days, and on how many holidays fall at a weekend, since they are no longer moved.
Which Kyrgyz holidays became working days?
Fatherland Defenders' Day on 23 February, the Day of the People's April Revolution on 7 April and the Days of History and Commemoration of Ancestors on 7 and 8 November. The new Labour Code keeps them as holidays but makes them ordinary working days, as 24.kg reported when parliament's social policy committee approved the draft in December 2024.
What happens when a holiday in Kyrgyzstan falls on a weekend?
Nothing is moved. The Labour Code of 2025 cancelled the transfer of holidays that fall on a Saturday or Sunday, so they are celebrated strictly on the calendar date. In 2026 Women's Day fell on a Sunday and Nooruz on a Saturday, and in 2027 Nooruz, Victory Day and Kurman Ait all fall on a Sunday.
How long is the New Year holiday in Kyrgyzstan?
In 2026 it ran from 1 to 7 January, seven days that joined New Year's Day to Orthodox Christmas, under the production calendar the government approved for the year. The law itself makes 1 and 7 January days off; the days between are granted year by year. Office Holidays lists a longer break, to 12 January 2026.
When are Orozo Ait and Kurman Ait?
On dates set by the Islamic lunar calendar, so they change from year to year and are confirmed shortly before. Orozo Ait, the end of Ramadan, fell on Friday 20 March 2026 and falls on Tuesday 9 March 2027. Kurman Ait, the Feast of Sacrifice, fell on Wednesday 27 May 2026 and falls on Sunday 16 May 2027, a day that is not replaced.
What do the Days of History and Commemoration of Ancestors mark?
The national uprising of 1916 against tsarist conscription and the flight to China that followed it, which Kyrgyz call Urkun, the exodus. The two days, 7 and 8 November, took the place of the old holiday for the October Revolution, which the country kept from independence until 2017. Under the 2025 Labour Code they are marked but are working days.
Why is 7 April a holiday in Kyrgyzstan?
It commemorates the People's April Revolution of 2010, when protests that began in Talas on 6 April reached Bishkek on 7 April, police opened fire on the crowds and President Bakiyev was driven from power. The day was recognised as a public holiday in 2016. Since the 2025 Labour Code it has been a working day, shortened in 2026.
