Jersey runs on Greenwich Mean Time through the winter and on British Summer Time, one hour ahead of UTC, from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October, so a clock in St Helier never differs from one in London. The island is one zone. It keeps the British clocks under legislation of its own, and the time zone database files Europe/Jersey as a pointer to Europe/London, an entry that exists only because Jersey has its own ISO code, JE.

Greenwich Mean Time became Jersey's time in 1898, eighteen years after the Statutes (Definition of Time) Act 1880 made it the legal time across Great Britain. Summer time came through Westminster: the Summer Time Act 1922 named the Channel Islands in its long title, and the amending Act of 1947 extended to them too. Jersey surrendered to German forces on 1 July 1940, and the occupiers moved its clocks from GMT to Central European Time, the time of most of continental Europe, where they stayed until liberation on 9 May 1945. A referendum in 2008 asked whether the island should move for good to Central European Time and Central European Summer Time; the proposal was rejected. The history listed below is London's before 1970, so the war years show British Double Summer Time and not the German clock, and GMT appears from 1890, eight years before Jersey took it.

Common questions

Questions about the time in Jersey

What time zone is Jersey in?

Greenwich Mean Time, UTC+0, in winter, and British Summer Time, UTC+1, from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October. The whole island keeps one clock. The time zone database lists it as Europe/Jersey, a link to Europe/London, so every offset it returns for the island, past or present, is London's.

When do the clocks change in Jersey in 2026?

They went forward on Sunday 29 March 2026, from 01:00 to 02:00, and go back on Sunday 25 October, from 02:00 to 01:00. In 2027 the dates are 28 March and 31 October. Both changes happen at 01:00 UTC, the same instant as in the United Kingdom.

Is Jersey on the same time as London?

Yes, in every week of the year. Jersey is a Crown Dependency and not part of the United Kingdom, and it observes GMT and British Summer Time under separate legislation, but its dates match the British ones. A call booked for 09:00 in London is at 09:00 in St Helier in January and in July alike.

Did Jersey keep German time during the occupation?

It did. After the island surrendered on 1 July 1940, the German authorities moved its clocks from GMT to Central European Time, putting it in step with most of continental Europe, and later switched traffic to the right-hand side of the road. The German clock ran until the liberation of 9 May 1945. The time zone database does not show it, because Europe/Jersey borrows London's history, which has British Double Summer Time for those summers.

Did Jersey vote on moving to Central European Time?

In 2008 the island held a referendum on moving permanently to Central European Time in winter and Central European Summer Time in summer, which would have put it an hour ahead of London all year. Voters rejected the proposal, and Jersey stayed on GMT and British Summer Time.

When did Jersey adopt Greenwich Mean Time?

In 1898. Great Britain had made GMT its legal time under the Statutes (Definition of Time) Act 1880, and the Isle of Man adopted it on 30 March 1883, so Jersey came to it well after both. The time zone database shows GMT for the island from 1890 all the same, since the entry reuses London's record and has no date of its own for the change.
