Public holidays in Isle of Man

Ten, all on weekdays once the weekend rule is applied: New Year's Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, the Early May and Spring bank holidays, the TT Bank Holiday, Tynwald Day, the Summer Bank Holiday, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Two of them are moved days: Tynwald Day and Boxing Day both fell at a weekend and are taken on the Monday after.

Monday 5 July 2027. The day is fixed on 5 July and moves to the following Monday only when 5 July falls on a Saturday or Sunday. In 2026 it fell on a Sunday, so the ceremony at St John's and the day off were both held on Monday 6 July. In 2028 it falls on a Wednesday.

Tynwald met at midsummer, on 24 June, the feast of St John the Baptist. When the island adopted the Gregorian calendar in 1753, a year after Great Britain, the law kept the court on the same natural day it would have had under the Julian calendar. That day was 5 July in the new reckoning. The gap between the calendars later widened to 13 days, but the date was never moved again.

Tynwald leaves its usual chamber in Douglas and sits partly in the Royal Chapel of St John the Baptist and partly on Tynwald Hill, a mound said to hold soil from all 17 parishes. The path to the hill is strewn with rushes. The Coroner of Glenfaba fences the court, new coroners take the oath, the First Deemster proclaims each new law in English and the Second Deemster in Manx. Petitions for the redress of grievances are then handed in at the foot of the hill, and a fair and market run alongside.

Friday 11 June 2027, eleven days after the Spring Bank Holiday on 31 May. The holiday is also called Senior Race Day, after the Senior TT, traditionally the last race of the meeting. The races take roughly two weeks from the Spring Bank Holiday: five days of qualifying first, then a week of racing on public roads closed for the purpose, around the 37.73-mile Snaefell Mountain Course.

It moves to the next day that is not itself a holiday. Christmas 2027 has two at once: Christmas Day is a Saturday and Boxing Day a Sunday, so the days off are Monday 27 and Tuesday 28 December, and the break runs four days.

Every one of the 10 bank holidays in 2027 lands on a Monday, a Tuesday joined to a Monday, or a Friday, so each makes a break of at least three days. Easter runs four days, from Good Friday 26 March to Easter Monday 29 March, and so does Christmas, from Saturday 25 to Tuesday 28 December. New Year's Day, the TT Bank Holiday and the four Mondays in May, July and August each add a three-day weekend.
