Guernsey keeps Greenwich Mean Time in winter and British Summer Time, one hour ahead, from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October, so a clock in St Peter Port always reads the same as one in London. The time zone database has a Europe/Guernsey entry only because the island has an ISO code of its own, GG; the entry is a link to Europe/London, and every offset it returns, past or present, is London's.

Guernsey took Greenwich Mean Time in 1913, fifteen years after Jersey. The Summer Time Act 1916 covered Great Britain and Ireland; the Summer Time Act 1922 was the first whose title named the Channel Islands, and the Act of 1947 did the same. During the German occupation, from 30 June 1940 to liberation on 9 May 1945, the occupying authorities moved the islands from GMT to Central European Time, in line with most of continental Europe. The Summer Time Order 1997, whose extent includes Guernsey, put the island on the European Union's start and end dates from 1998. Before 1970 the time zone database gives Guernsey London's history, so for 1941 to 1945 it shows British Double Summer Time and not the German clock the island kept, and it gives GMT from 1890, before Guernsey adopted it.

Common questions
Questions about the time in Guernsey
What time zone is Guernsey in?
Guernsey runs on Greenwich Mean Time (UTC+0) through the winter and moves to British Summer Time (UTC+1) between the last Sunday in March and the last Sunday in October. St Peter Port keeps the same clock as London all year. The time zone database names the zone Europe/Guernsey, but the entry is a link to Europe/London, made because Guernsey has an ISO 3166-1 code of its own.
When do the clocks change in Guernsey in 2026?
Summer time began at 01:00 on Sunday 29 March 2026, when the clocks jumped to 02:00, and ends at 02:00 on Sunday 25 October, when they fall back to 01:00. The 2027 pair is 28 March and 31 October. Guernsey changes on the same night as Great Britain; the Summer Time Order 1997 lists Guernsey in its extent.
Did Guernsey use German time during the occupation?
Yes. The occupation began on 30 June 1940, and the German authorities moved the Channel Islands from Greenwich Mean Time to Central European Time, to bring them into line with most of continental Europe. Traffic was switched to the right-hand side of the road at the same period, and occupation money was issued. The islands were liberated on 9 May 1945, when the German forces surrendered aboard HMS Bulldog at St Peter Port.
When did Guernsey adopt Greenwich Mean Time?
In 1913. Great Britain made GMT its legal time under the Statutes (Definition of Time) Act 1880, the Isle of Man followed on 30 March 1883 and Jersey in 1898, which left Guernsey later than both. The time zone database does not record the step, since the London history Guernsey shares starts on GMT in 1890.
Why is Europe/Guernsey a link to Europe/London?
The time zone database keeps one zone for the United Kingdom, Europe/London. Europe/Guernsey, Europe/Jersey and Europe/Isle_of_Man exist because each island has its own ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 code, and each points to the London entry. Software reading Europe/Guernsey therefore gets London's offsets for every date, including the occupation years, when the island's own clock ran on Central European Time and London's did not.
Will Guernsey stop changing its clocks?
Nothing on file says so. Guernsey's summer time runs under the Summer Time Order 1997, a United Kingdom order that extends to the island. The European proposal of September 2018 to end seasonal clock changes never took effect for the United Kingdom, which left the Union first and is free to make its own arrangements; in September 2018 the United Kingdom government had no plans to end summer time.
