Uzbekistan has nine public holidays in law: seven on fixed dates, from New Year's Day to Constitution Day on 8 December, and the two Muslim feasts of Ramazon Hayit and Qurbon Hayit. Each year a presidential decree then adds non-working days and moves weekends to join them into breaks. For 2026, Decree UP-257 made Friday 2 January, Thursday 28 and Friday 29 May, Monday 31 August and Thursday 31 December days off for everyone, and gave Monday 9 March in place of Women's Day, which fell on a Sunday.
The decree treats employees on a five-day week and those who work six days differently. When Navruz fell on Saturday 21 March 2026 and the Day of Remembrance and Honour on Saturday 9 May, the following Mondays, 23 March and 11 May, were given off to the five-day week; a six-day worker had the Saturday already. The days before several holidays are shortened working days.
The two Hayit feasts follow the Islamic lunar calendar, and the decree gives their dates as tentative. Ramazon Hayit fell on Friday 20 March 2026, the eve of Navruz, and Qurbon Hayit on Wednesday 27 May 2026; for 2027 the tentative dates are Wednesday 10 March and Monday 17 May.

Days marked in Uzbekistan that are not days off
- 14 January: Defenders of the Motherland DayDefenders of the Motherland Day, 14 January, is marked but is not a day off; timeanddate lists it as an observance in both years.Wednesday
The decree for 2027, which would add the bridging days and weekend transfers for that year, is not among the sources on file, so for 2027 the sources give only the nine holidays in law and the observance of 14 January. In 2027 Navruz and the Day of Remembrance and Honour both fall on a Sunday, the case in which the 2026 decree gave the following Monday off.
Moving days off can also mean working a Saturday. For 2026 the decree took the Saturday off of 12 December from the five-day week and gave it back on Thursday 31 December. It also made Wednesday 31 December 2025 a non-working day, so for the five-day week the New Year break ran from 31 December 2025 to 4 January 2026.
Common questions
Questions about public holidays in Uzbekistan
How many public holidays does Uzbekistan have?
Nine in law: New Year's Day, International Women's Day, Navruz, the Day of Remembrance and Honour, Independence Day, Teachers' and Mentors' Day, Constitution Day, and the two Muslim feasts, Ramazon Hayit and Qurbon Hayit. Each year a presidential decree adds more days off. For 2026, Decree UP-257 added 2 January, 28 and 29 May, 31 August and 31 December for all employees, and moved weekends so that holidays falling on Saturday or Sunday were followed by a Monday off.
When is Ramazon Hayit in 2026 and 2027?
Ramazon Hayit, the end of Ramadan, fell on Friday 20 March 2026, the day before Navruz. In 2027 the tentative date is Wednesday 10 March, ten days earlier in the year. The feast follows the Islamic lunar calendar, so its date moves from year to year, and the presidential decree for 2026 gave the March date as tentative.
Why do some Uzbek holidays apply only to a five-day week?
Uzbek rules recognise both five-day and six-day working weeks, and the decree that sets each year's days off treats the two separately. When a holiday falls on a Saturday, as Navruz and the Day of Remembrance and Honour did in 2026, the five-day week gets the following Monday off, while for six-day workers the Saturday itself is the day off. Saturday 3 January 2026 likewise counted as an extra day off only for the six-day week.
Does Uzbekistan celebrate Victory Day on 9 May?
It marks the date under another name. In Uzbek it is Xotira va Qadirlash Kuni, the Day of Remembrance and Honour, a public holiday on 9 May. It recalls the Second World War, in which the Wikipedia country article counts 1,433,230 people from Uzbekistan who fought in the Red Army and 263,005 who died. In 2026 it fell on a Saturday.
Why is Uzbek Independence Day on 1 September?
The Supreme Soviet of the republic declared independence on 31 August 1991, after the failed coup in Moscow, and 1 September was proclaimed National Independence Day. It is a public holiday, and in 2026 the decree also gave Monday 31 August off, the anniversary of the declaration itself, for a four-day break with the weekend.
Is Teachers' Day a day off in Uzbekistan?
Yes. Teachers' and Mentors' Day, O'qituvchi va Murabbiylar Kuni, on 1 October, is one of the nine holidays in law and a full day off for everyone, with the working day before it shortened. It fell on a Thursday in 2026 and falls on a Friday in 2027.
How long is the Navruz holiday in Uzbekistan?
One day in law, 21 March, though the decree can stretch it. In 2026 Navruz fell on a Saturday, the day after Ramazon Hayit on Friday 20 March, and the five-day week also had Monday 23 March off, so it had four days in a row from Friday to Monday. In 2027 Navruz falls on a Sunday; whether a Monday is added depends on that year's decree.
