Christmas Day (Orthodox)

عيد الميلاد المجيد

After it: Revolution Day 2011 / National Police Day, Monday 25 January

Thursday, 7 January 2027

Five of Egypt's 21 days off in 2026 are not kept on the date they mark. The presidency's list puts 25 January, 1 May, 30 June, Islamic New Year and the Prophet's Birthday on the Thursday after, where each runs straight into the Friday and Saturday weekend. With them, eight of the year's days off land on a Thursday. Sixteen of the 21 fall in the Sunday to Thursday working week.

Three calendars meet in the list. Labour Day and the national days follow the Gregorian one: three revolutions, in 1952, 2011 and 2013, Sinai Liberation Day and Armed Forces Day. Coptic Christmas is 29 Koiak in the Coptic calendar, which lands on 7 January, and Sham El-Nessim is the Monday after Coptic Easter. Both Eids, Arafat Day, Islamic New Year and the Prophet's Birthday move with the Hijri year.

The Eids give the longest breaks. Eid al-Fitr ran from Thursday 19 to Monday 23 March 2026, and Arafat Day with Eid al-Adha made six days off from Tuesday 26 to Sunday 31 May. Each Eid had five days off that year, against three for Eid al-Fitr and four for Eid al-Adha by the Hijri dates.

A holiday on the weekend is not always moved. Sinai Liberation Day stayed on Saturday 25 April 2026, while Labour Day, which fell on Friday 1 May, was given as Thursday 7 May.

Government offices and ministries rest on Friday, and Saturday is an official rest day as well, kept by banks and many institutions. Private institutions and shops whose owners are Christian often rest on Sunday instead, and some barbers and hairdressers take Monday off. Coptic Epiphany, 19 January, is not on the list, but most universities and some government offices close for it.

The presidency's list is for 2026. The 2027 dates of the Islamic days are the expected Hijri ones: Eid al-Fitr from 9 to 11 March, Arafat Day on 15 May and Eid al-Adha from 16 to 19 May. How long each Eid runs, and which anniversaries move to a Thursday, is set when the official list for the year comes out.

Common questions

Questions about public holidays in Egypt

How many public holidays does Egypt have in 2026?

Twenty-one days off are on the official list for 2026. Sixteen fall on a working day and five on the Friday and Saturday weekend: two days of each Eid, and Sinai Liberation Day on Saturday 25 April. The two Eids and Arafat Day account for eleven of the 21. On the dates expected for 2027 the count is 18, because each Eid is listed for three or four days against five in 2026.

Why are so many public holidays in Egypt on a Thursday?

The official list moves them there. In 2026, 25 January fell on a Sunday and was kept on Thursday 29 January; Labour Day, a Friday, went to Thursday 7 May; and 30 June, a Tuesday, went to Thursday 2 July. Islamic New Year and the Prophet's Birthday moved the same way, to Thursday 18 June and Thursday 27 August. Each move joins the holiday to the Friday and Saturday weekend.

When is Eid al-Fitr in Egypt in 2027?

It is expected on Tuesday 9 March 2027, with days off through Thursday 11 March, so the break runs into the weekend and ends on Saturday 13 March. The date follows the Hijri calendar, and the number of days is fixed in each year's official list. In 2026 that list gave five, from Thursday 19 to Monday 23 March.

What is Sham El-Nessim?

The spring festival, a day off on the Monday after Coptic Easter: 13 April 2026 and 3 May 2027. Egyptians of all religions keep it, mostly outdoors, with picnics in public gardens, along the Nile or at the zoo. The usual food is fesikh with lettuce and green onions, and boiled eggs are coloured and given as gifts. The festival is generally held to continue spring celebrations more than 4,500 years old.

Is Coptic Christmas a public holiday in Egypt?

Yes, for the whole country. The Coptic Orthodox Church keeps Christmas on 29 Koiak, which corresponds to 7 January. In 2026 it was a Wednesday, and one day of leave on Thursday 8 January made four days off. In 2027 it falls on a Thursday and leads straight into the weekend, ending on Saturday 9 January.

Is Easter a public holiday in Egypt?

Easter Sunday is not on the official list, and Sunday is a working day in Egypt. The day off is the Monday after Coptic Easter, Sham El-Nessim, which falls on 13 April 2026 and 3 May 2027. A day of leave on Easter Sunday, 12 April 2026, links Sham El-Nessim to the weekend for four days off, Friday 10 to Monday 13 April. None of the days of Coptic Holy Week is on the presidency's list.

Which revolutions are public holidays in Egypt?

Three. 23 July is the National Day, for the revolution of 1952 that ended the monarchy. 25 January marks the start of the 2011 revolution, on a date youth groups chose because it was already National Police Day. 30 June marks the mass protests of 2013, after which the army removed Mohamed Morsi on 3 July; the official name of the day is the June 30 Revolution.

What are the long weekends in Egypt in 2026?

Six run from Thursday to Saturday, made by the five moved days and by 23 July, a Thursday in 2026: 29 to 31 January, 7 to 9 May, 18 to 20 June, 2 to 4 July, 23 to 25 July and 27 to 29 August. Eid al-Fitr gave five days in March and Arafat Day with Eid al-Adha six, from Tuesday 26 to Sunday 31 May.
