Day of Respect for Cultural Diversity

Día del Respeto a la Diversidad Cultural

After it: National Sovereignty Day, Monday 23 November

Monday, 12 October 2026

Argentina's calendar has fifteen national holidays on sixteen days, Carnival taking a Monday and a Tuesday before Lent. Eleven stay on their dates whatever the weekday. Four are movable under Law 27,399: Güemes on 17 June, San Martín on 17 August, the Day of Respect for Cultural Diversity on 12 October and National Sovereignty Day on 20 November. When one of these falls on a Tuesday or a Wednesday it moves to the Monday before, and on a Thursday or a Friday to the Monday after, so most of them end up closing a long weekend.

The same law lets the government add up to three days a year to promote tourism, always a Monday or a Friday. For 2026 a resolution published on 26 December 2025 chose Monday 23 March, Friday 10 July and Monday 7 December. Each sits beside a fixed holiday, and each turns it into four days off in a row: Saturday 21 to Tuesday 24 March, Thursday 9 to Sunday 12 July and Saturday 5 to Tuesday 8 December.

Several of the dates record the country's own twentieth century. 24 March marks the coup of 1976 and 2 April the landing on the Falkland Islands in 1982. Both are fixed, so in 2026 they fall nine days apart, on a Tuesday and a Thursday.

The movable rule has changed over the years. An older statement of it, still on the Buenos Aires city tourism site, moved a holiday falling on any day from Thursday to Sunday to the following Monday. The rule the Cabinet Office cites from Law 27,399 moves only Tuesdays and Wednesdays back and Thursdays and Fridays forward, which is why National Sovereignty Day stays on Saturday 20 November in 2027.

Argentina also keeps religious non-working days for its minorities, on which members of the faith are excused from work: the first two and last two days of Passover, Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur for Jews, Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha for Muslims, and 24 April, the Day of Action for Tolerance and Respect among Peoples, for Armenians. Their dates follow each faith's own calendar.
