American Samoa has 14 public holidays in 2026. Eleven are the federal holidays of the United States, from New Year's Day to Christmas. Good Friday is the twelfth, and the other two belong to the territory alone. Flag Day on 17 April marks the day in 1900 when the chiefs of Tutuila signed the Deed of Cession and the United States flag was raised, and the day in 1960 when the territory's own flag went up for the first time. Manuʻa Cession Day on 16 July marks the Tui Manuʻa's signature of 1904.
In 2027 three holidays fall on a weekend, and the published calendar gives the day off on a weekday instead: Flag Day, a Saturday, is observed on Friday 16 April; Juneteenth, also a Saturday, on Friday 18 June; and Independence Day, a Sunday, on Monday 5 July. Christmas Day 2027 is a Saturday as well, and the sources on file do not yet give a substitute day for it.

Observances
Days marked in American Samoa that are not days off
- 13 May: Swains Island Day13 May, listed for the territory by Wikipedia and by qppstudio. Neither the territorial code nor timeanddate includes it, and it is shown here as an observance.Wednesday
- 11 October: White SundayA Christian observance on the second Sunday of October, 11 October in 2026, listed by qppstudio. It falls on a Sunday and brings no extra day off.SundayDate moves
The territory's own list, section 1.0501 of the American Samoa Code, names eleven days and dates two of them the old way: Washington's Birthday on 22 February and Memorial Day on 30 May, the dates the Uniform Holidays Act of 1968 replaced with Mondays on the federal calendar. It was last amended in 1983, to add Manuʻa Cession Day. The calendar in practice, as timeanddate and qppstudio list it, follows the federal Monday dates and adds Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Juneteenth and Columbus Day, which the code does not name. The dates here follow that practice.
Swains Island Day on 13 May and White Sunday in October appear in some lists and not in others. Both are shown as observances, marked and not counted as days off.
Common questions
Questions about public holidays in American Samoa
How many public holidays does American Samoa have in 2026?
Fourteen: eleven federal holidays of the United States, Good Friday, and two days of the territory's own, Flag Day on Friday 17 April and Manuʻa Cession Day on Thursday 16 July. Independence Day fell on a Saturday in 2026. The territorial code itself lists eleven days; Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Juneteenth and Columbus Day are kept with the federal calendar.
What is Flag Day in American Samoa?
The territory's own holiday on 17 April. It marks the signing of the Deed of Cession of Tutuila and Aunuʻu on 17 April 1900, when the chiefs ceded the islands and the United States flag was raised on Tutuila, and the first raising of the flag of American Samoa sixty years later to the day, in 1960. In 2027 it falls on a Saturday and the day off is Friday 16 April.
What does Manuʻa Cession Day mark?
A public holiday on 16 July marking the Deed of Cession of Manuʻa, which the Tui Manuʻa Elisara signed on 16 July 1904, bringing the Manuʻa islands under the United States four years after Tutuila. It was added to the territory's statutory list in 1983. In 2026 it fell on a Thursday and in 2027 it is a Friday.
Why does Good Friday count as a public holiday there?
Because the territory's own code puts it on the list: the Friday before Easter is one of the eleven public holidays in section 1.0501, although it is not a federal holiday. It fell on 3 April in 2026 and falls on 26 March in 2027, so its date moves with Easter every year.
Which holidays move to a weekday in 2027?
A holiday on a weekend is given a weekday in its place, according to qppstudio's calendar: a Saturday holiday moves to the Friday before and a Sunday holiday to the Monday after. That gives Friday 16 April for Flag Day, Friday 18 June for Juneteenth and Monday 5 July for Independence Day. The sources on file do not yet list a substitute for Christmas Day 2027, a Saturday.
Do people get Swains Island Day off?
The sources disagree. Wikipedia and qppstudio list 13 May as Swains Island Day in American Samoa, while the territorial code and timeanddate leave it out. This page shows it as an observance and does not count it as a day off. The atoll it marks has been administered with the territory since 1925.
Which federal holidays does American Samoa keep?
It keeps all of them in practice, and adds Good Friday, Flag Day and Manuʻa Cession Day. Its own code still dates Washington's Birthday to 22 February and Memorial Day to 30 May, as before the Uniform Holidays Act of 1968, and leaves out Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Juneteenth and Columbus Day, but the published calendars follow the federal Monday dates.
