Algeria keeps one time, one hour ahead of UTC, all year and across the whole country, from Algiers on the coast to Tamanrasset in the Sahara. The time zone database files it as Africa/Algiers and names the offset Central European Standard Time, the same clock as neighbouring Tunisia. There is no summer time: the clocks have not moved since 1981.

Clock changes

Algeria does not change its clocks

Algeria's clock has changed sides more than once. Under French rule it kept summer time from 1916 to 1921, in 1939 and in 1944 and 1945, and it switched between UTC and UTC+1 several times, running on UTC+1 through the war of independence from 1957 to 1962. Independent Algeria returned to UTC in 1963, tried summer time in 1971, 1978 and 1980, and moved back and forth between UTC and UTC+1 until 1981. Since 1982 it has stayed on UTC+1 without a seasonal change.

Common questions

Questions about the time in Algeria

What time zone is Algeria in?

Algeria is on UTC+1 all year, listed in the time zone database as Africa/Algiers and named Central European Standard Time. The whole country keeps this single time, so a clock in Algiers shows the same hour as one in Oran, Ghardaïa or Tamanrasset, more than 1,500 km to the south.

Does Algeria change its clocks?

No. Algeria has kept UTC+1 without summer time since 1982. It last used summer time in 1980, and before that in 1971 and 1978, and in 1981 it made its final switch between UTC and UTC+1. Neighbouring countries that do change their clocks can therefore move in and out of step with Algeria during the year.

Is Algeria on the same time as France?

Only in winter. France keeps UTC+1 in winter and UTC+2 in summer, while Algeria stays on UTC+1 throughout, so from late March to late October Paris is one hour ahead of Algiers. Before 1981 the two clocks were often not aligned at all, since Algeria moved between UTC and UTC+1 several times.

How far ahead of London is Algeria?

One hour in winter, when London keeps Greenwich Mean Time and Algiers UTC+1. From the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October, when London moves to British Summer Time, the two cities show the same hour, because Algeria does not change its clocks. Algeria itself kept UTC for long stretches, including 1947 to 1955 and 1964 to 1970.

How are dates and times written in Algeria?

In Arabic the common short form puts the day first, as in 5/3/2026 for 5 March, and times are shown on a 12-hour clock with the Arabic marker for morning or afternoon. The week, in the locale data, starts on Saturday.
