Sunday, 1 November 2026
Algeria has 14 paid public holidays in a normal year, and 15 in 2026, when an extra day was given for the legislative election on Thursday 2 July. Five are fixed civil dates and nine follow the Islamic lunar calendar, so their dates change from year to year; the dates for 2027 are provisional until the moon is sighted.
The civil calendar is a calendar of the independence struggle. Revolution Day on 1 November marks the start of the war in 1954, and Independence Day on 5 July the day in 1962 that closed 132 years of French rule. Yennayer, the Amazigh New Year on 12 January, was added in 2018, and since 2023 Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha each carry three days off instead of two.

The dates of the Islamic holidays depend on the sighting of the moon and can move by a day. Those for 2027 follow the tentative dates published in advance and may shift when the authorities confirm them.
Timeanddate lists only two days for Eid al-Adha in 2026 and 2027. The Council of Ministers' decision of 2023, reported by Radio Algérie, made both Eids three paid days, and this calendar follows it.
Several national days are marked without a day off: Chahid Day for the war's dead on 18 February, Knowledge Day on 16 April in memory of Abdelhamid Ben Badis, Student Day on 19 May, Moudjahid Day on 20 August, and National Emigration Day on 17 October, which recalls the Paris demonstration of 1961.
Common questions
Questions about public holidays in Algeria
How many public holidays does Algeria have?
Fourteen paid days in a normal year: New Year's Day, Yennayer, Labour Day, Independence Day and Revolution Day, plus the Islamic New Year, Ashura, the Prophet's Birthday and three days each for Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. In 2026 a fifteenth day was added for the legislative election on 2 July.
When is Eid al-Fitr in Algeria in 2027?
The tentative dates are Wednesday 10 March to Friday 12 March 2027, three days off, following the end of Ramadan. The Islamic calendar is lunar, so the dates are confirmed only when the new moon is sighted and may move by a day. In 2026 the three days ran from Friday 20 March to Sunday 22 March.
Why does Algeria give three days for each Eid?
The Council of Ministers extended Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha from two paid days to three in 2023, as Radio Algérie reported at the time. The holidays themselves rest on a law of 26 July 1963, amended by ordinances in 1966 and 1968, and the extension raised the count to 14, six of them Eid days.
What is Yennayer?
The Amazigh, or Berber, new year, kept on 12 January. It was declared a national holiday on 27 December 2017 and first observed as a day off on 12 January 2018, part of the same recognition of Amazigh identity that made Tamazight an official language in 2016.
What does 1 November commemorate in Algeria?
The start of the war of independence, when the National Liberation Front launched coordinated attacks across the country on the night of 31 October to 1 November 1954. Revolution Day is a paid holiday; in 2026 it falls on Sunday 1 November and in 2027 on Monday 1 November.
Is 5 July a holiday in Algeria?
Yes. Independence Day marks 5 July 1962, the date the provisional executive chose because it was 132 years to the day since the French took Algiers. It is also kept as Youth Day. In 2026 it falls on a Sunday and in 2027 on a Monday.
