Tunisia has 14 days off in 2026 and 14 in 2027. Eight are civil holidays on fixed dates. The rest belong to four Islamic feasts that follow the lunar calendar and come ten or eleven days earlier each year, with three days off for Eid al-Fitr and, in 2026, two for Eid al-Adha. The two calendars met on Friday 20 March 2026, when the first day of Eid al-Fitr fell on Independence Day.
Five of the eight civil dates come from the end of French rule and the state built after it. Martyrs' Day on 9 April recalls the nationalist demonstrations that French troops put down in 1938. Independence came on 20 March 1956 and the republic followed in 1957, kept on 25 July. Evacuation Day on 15 October marks the last French forces leaving Bizerte in 1963, and Women's Day on 13 August the Code of Personal Status of 1956.
Revolution Day is the only date taken from this century. It falls on 17 December, the day in 2010 when Mohamed Bouazizi set himself on fire in Sidi Bouzid, which set off the protests that ended Zine El Abidine Ben Ali's rule. The Arabic Wikipedia's table of flag days gives Revolution and Youth Day as 14 January instead, the day in 2011 that Ben Ali fled.

The four Islamic holidays follow the lunar calendar, so their Gregorian dates change every year. The 2026 dates are timeanddate's. Those for 2027 come from qppstudio's list for September 2026 to August 2027, which gives Eid al-Adha one day, Sunday 16 May, where 2026 had two.
Under Ben Ali, 7 November, the anniversary of his taking power in 1987, was celebrated as a national holiday. It has gone from the list.
Two days are marked without a day off. International Women's Day on 8 March is kept alongside Tunisia's own Women's Day in August, and the first day of Ramadan, 19 February in 2026, opens the month of fasting that Eid al-Fitr closes.
Common questions
Questions about public holidays in Tunisia
How many public holidays does Tunisia have?
Twelve holidays give 14 days off in 2026: eight civil dates, three days for Eid al-Fitr, two for Eid al-Adha, and one each for the Islamic New Year and the Prophet's Birthday. Eid al-Fitr began on Independence Day that year, so the two holidays shared Friday 20 March. Three of the days off fell on a weekend: 21 and 22 March, and Republic Day on Saturday 25 July.
When is Eid al-Fitr in Tunisia in 2027?
qppstudio's list puts the three days off on Tuesday 9, Wednesday 10 and Thursday 11 March 2027, eleven days earlier than in 2026, when they ran from Friday 20 to Sunday 22 March. The feast falls on 1 Shawwal of the lunar calendar, so its Gregorian date comes earlier every year. Leave on Monday 8 and Friday 12 March would join the Eid to two weekends, nine days in a row.
How long is the Eid al-Adha holiday in Tunisia?
Two days in 2026, Wednesday 27 and Thursday 28 May, and a day of leave on Friday 29 May stretched the break to five days, Wednesday to Sunday. qppstudio's list for 2027 has one day, Sunday 16 May, eleven days earlier. The feast, called Aïd El Kebir in Tunisia, falls on 10 Dhu al-Hijjah of the lunar calendar.
What happened in Tunisia on 17 December 2010?
An officer in Sidi Bouzid confiscated the cart and produce of Mohamed Bouazizi, a street vendor, and he set himself on fire in protest. The demonstrations that followed ended with Zine El Abidine Ben Ali resigning and fleeing to Saudi Arabia on 14 January 2011. The date is now Revolution Day, a day off. The Arabic Wikipedia's table of flag days lists Revolution and Youth Day on the second date, 14 January.
What does Evacuation Day commemorate in Tunisia?
The withdrawal of the last French forces in 1963, from the naval base at Bizerte. France kept using the port and its airfield after independence. In July 1961 Tunisia blockaded the base to force an evacuation, and the crisis became a three-day battle that left some 630 Tunisians and 24 French dead. France ceded the city and the base two years later. The day off is 15 October, a Thursday in 2026 and a Friday in 2027.
Which law does Women's Day celebrate in Tunisia?
The Code of Personal Status, promulgated on 13 August 1956 by a decree of Lamine Bey, five months after independence. The code outlawed polygamy, set minimum ages for marriage, required the consent of both spouses and let either of them file for divorce in a secular court. It came into force on 1 January 1957, and the anniversary of its promulgation became National Women's Day.
Is Christmas a public holiday in Tunisia?
No. Every religious day off is a Muslim feast: Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha, the Islamic New Year and the Mouled. The government recognises the religious holidays of the other monotheistic faiths, but none of them carries a day off, and 25 December is a working day. New Year's Day on 1 January is off as a civil holiday.
Which holidays make long weekends in Tunisia in 2027?
Five fixed holidays fall on a Friday in 2027: New Year's Day, Martyrs' Day on 9 April, Women's Day on 13 August, Evacuation Day on 15 October and Revolution Day on 17 December, and each gives three days in a row. The Prophet's Birthday, forecast for Saturday 14 August, lands inside the Women's Day weekend. In 2026 the same five dates were Thursdays, so one day of leave on the Friday made four days off.
