Taiwan's days off are set by the Directorate-General of Personnel Administration, which publishes a calendar for government agencies and schools each summer for the following year: the 2026 calendar on 17 June 2025 and the 2027 calendar on 7 July 2026. Most days off follow the lunar calendar or commemorate the Republic of China, and when one falls on a Saturday or Sunday a weekday is given instead, so 2026 has substitute days on 20 February, 27 February, 3 April, 6 April, 9 October and 26 October.

The rules changed in 2025. On 9 May 2025 the Legislative Yuan passed the Memorial Days and Holidays Implementation Act, which raised the old administrative rules to statute, made Lunar New Year's Eve, Confucius' Birthday on 28 September, Taiwan Retrocession Day on 25 October and Constitution Day on 25 December national holidays again, and extended Labour Day on 1 May from workers to everyone. The Lunar New Year break now lasts at least seven days.

The calendar mixes two kinds of day. Six memorial days carry a day off: the founding of the Republic of China, Peace Memorial Day, Confucius' Birthday, National Day, Retrocession Day and Constitution Day. The others are festivals and customary days: the Lunar New Year, Children's Day, the Qingming Festival, Labour Day, the Dragon Boat Festival and the Mid-Autumn Festival.

Under Article 8 of the act, a memorial day or festival that falls on a regular day off is replaced by a substitute day. In the government's calendars a Saturday holiday moves to the Friday before and a Sunday holiday to the Monday after: in 2027 Labour Day on Saturday 1 May gives Friday 30 April off, and Constitution Day on Saturday 25 December gives Friday 24 December. Friday 31 December 2027 is the substitute for Founding Day 2028, which falls on a Saturday.

The act also lets the authorities set make-up workdays, weekend days worked in exchange for an extra day off, and this page has no way to show one. Neither the 2026 nor the 2027 government calendar contains any: no Saturday or Sunday in either year is marked as a workday.

The calendars are for government agencies and schools. Agencies that work around the clock, such as transport, police, fire services, the coast guard, hospitals and customs, set their own days off under Article 9, and the armed forces adjust theirs to operational needs.

Indigenous people may take three days off a year for the ceremonies of their own people, on dates the Council of Indigenous Peoples announces after consulting each community. Those days are not on this page because they differ by people.

The act names twenty memorial days in all, among them the lifting of martial law on 15 July, Indigenous Peoples Day on 1 August, the 823 Artillery Bombardment Memorial Day on 23 August and National Hakka Day on 28 December. Only the six listed above are days off.

Common questions

Questions about public holidays in Taiwan

When is the Lunar New Year break in Taiwan in 2026 and 2027?

In 2026 the break runs from Saturday 14 February to Sunday 22 February, nine days counting the weekends: the five-day holiday from 15 to 19 February plus Friday 20 February in place of the Sunday it included. In 2027 the government calendar gives days off from Thursday 4 February to Wednesday 10 February, seven days in a row, two of them substitutes for the weekend.

Is 25 October a holiday in Taiwan again?

Yes. Taiwan Retrocession Day, which the act combines with the memorial of the victory at Kuningtou on Kinmen in 1949, became a national holiday again under the law passed on 9 May 2025. In 2026 it falls on a Sunday and Monday 26 October is the day off; in 2027 it falls on a Monday.

What happens when a holiday falls on a weekend in Taiwan?

A substitute day is given, under Article 8 of the Memorial Days and Holidays Implementation Act. In both government calendars a Saturday holiday moves to the Friday before and a Sunday holiday to the Monday after, so National Day on Saturday 10 October 2026 brings Friday 9 October off, and Peace Memorial Day on Sunday 28 February 2027 brings Monday 1 March.

Does Taiwan have make-up working Saturdays?

Not in 2026 or 2027. The act lets the authorities set make-up workdays, but the calendars published by the Directorate-General of Personnel Administration mark no Saturday or Sunday as a workday in either year. Every day off in both years therefore comes without a weekend day to work back.

What is Peace Memorial Day?

The day off on 28 February, for the February 28 Incident of 1947, when widespread unrest was put down by troops sent from the mainland in March and the months that followed. The act lists it among the six memorial days that carry a day off. In 2026 it falls on a Saturday and Friday 27 February is the day off; in 2027 it falls on a Sunday and Monday 1 March is.

Is Confucius' Birthday a day off in Taiwan?

Yes, again since the law of 2025, which restored it as a national holiday after years as a working day. Confucius' Birthday on 28 September is also Teachers' Day. It falls on Monday 28 September 2026, giving a four-day weekend after the Mid-Autumn Festival on Friday 25 September, and on Tuesday 28 September 2027.

Are the Indigenous ceremonies public holidays?

For Indigenous people, yes, but not for the whole country. The act grants three days off a year for the ceremonies of each Indigenous people, on dates the Council of Indigenous Peoples announces after consulting the communities. The Saisiyat Pas-ta'ai, held on the fifteenth day of the tenth lunar month, is one such ceremony.
