Christmas Day

After it: Independence Day, Friday 1 January

Friday, 25 December 2026

Sudan has 15 days off in 2026 and 15 again in 2027. Nine of them in each year belong to the two Eids, four days for Eid al-Fitr and five for Eid al-Adha, and three are Christian: Coptic Christmas on 7 January, Coptic Easter and Christmas on 25 December. More than 97% of the population was Muslim at the 2011 division that split off South Sudan; the three Christian feasts are public holidays for the whole country.

The weekend is Friday and Saturday, with work from Sunday to Thursday, so Coptic Easter on Sunday 12 April 2026 and Sunday 2 May 2027 takes a day out of the working week. Five holidays a year land on the weekend. In 2026 they are the first two days of Eid al-Fitr, the last two of Eid al-Adha and Christmas.

The Islamic dates move about eleven days earlier each year. In 2027 Eid al-Fitr runs from Tuesday 9 to Friday 12 March, and Eid al-Adha starts on Saturday 15 May, so with the Friday before it Sudan has six days off in a row, from 14 to 19 May.

No full list from a Sudanese ministry or the official gazette is on file. The Embassy of Sudan in Washington lists the Islamic holidays by their Hijri dates, the Wikipedia list of Sudanese holidays cites timeanddate as its only reference, and the day-by-day dates for 2026 are timeanddate's.

The 2027 Islamic dates come from converting each Hijri date with the Umm al-Qura calendar, which gives every one of timeanddate's 2026 dates exactly. Islamic holidays depend on the sighting of the moon, so any of them can still move by a day.

Common questions

Questions about public holidays in Sudan

How many public holidays does Sudan have in 2026?

Fifteen days off: Independence Day on 1 January, Coptic Christmas on 7 January, Eid al-Fitr from 20 to 23 March, Coptic Easter on 12 April, Eid al-Adha from 26 to 30 May, the Hijri New Year on 16 June, the Prophet's birthday on 25 August and Christmas on 25 December. Ten fall on working days and five on a Friday or a Saturday, the Sudanese weekend. The first day of Ramadan, 18 February, is marked but is not a day off.

Why is Coptic Easter a day off in Sudan when it falls on a Sunday?

Sunday is a working day. Sudan's weekend is Friday and Saturday and its working week runs from Sunday to Thursday, so Coptic Easter, on Sunday 12 April 2026 and Sunday 2 May 2027, takes a real day out of the week. In both years it joins the weekend before it into three days off, Friday to Sunday.

Does Sudan have two Christmas holidays?

Yes: Coptic Christmas on 7 January and Christmas Day on 25 December. Coptic Orthodox and Greek Orthodox communities have long been settled in Khartoum and other northern cities, and Ethiopian and Eritrean Orthodox congregations, made up largely of refugees and migrants, live in Khartoum and the east. In 2026 and 2027 the December holiday lands in the weekend, while 7 January is a Wednesday and then a Thursday.

How long is the Eid al-Adha holiday in Sudan?

Five days by timeanddate's count, from 9 to 13 Dhu al-Hijjah: Tuesday 26 to Saturday 30 May 2026 and Saturday 15 to Wednesday 19 May 2027. The list of the Embassy of Sudan in Washington gives four, 9 to 12 Dhu al-Hijjah, which would end the 2027 holiday on Tuesday 18 May. With Friday 14 May in front of it, the five-day version gives 2027 six days off in a row.

When is Eid al-Fitr in Sudan in 2027?

From Tuesday 9 to Friday 12 March 2027, converting 1 to 4 Shawwal 1448 with the Umm al-Qura calendar. The new moon decides the feast, so the dates can move by a day. Friday 12 March is already a weekend day and a Saturday follows it, so the break lasts five days, to 13 March.

What does Independence Day on 1 January mark in Sudan?

The end of the Anglo-Egyptian condominium in 1956. Parliament declared independence unilaterally and unanimously on 19 December 1955, and Britain and Egypt recognised it on 1 January 1956. That day, at a ceremony at the People's Palace, the Egyptian and British flags came down and Prime Minister Ismail al-Azhari raised the new Sudanese flag of green, blue and yellow stripes.

When is the Prophet's birthday in Sudan?

Mawlid al-Nabi falls on 12 Rabi al-Awwal: Tuesday 25 August 2026 and Saturday 14 August 2027. The 2026 date is a day off in the middle of the working week, while the 2027 one lands on the weekend and takes no working day. That 2027 date is calculated from the Hijri calendar and may shift by one day once the moon is sighted.
