Sunday, 1 November 2026

The Republic of the Congo has 10 public holidays with a day off in 2026 and again in 2027. Five are church feasts and two are New Year and Labour Day. The other three trace the founding of the state in order of events: Republic Day on 28 November for the republic named in 1958, the National Day on 15 August for independence in 1960, and Reconciliation Day on 10 June for the close of the Sovereign National Conference in 1991.

Republic Day is the older founding date by almost two years. On 28 November 1958, at Pointe-Noire, deliberation no. 112/58 of the Territorial Assembly of Middle Congo gave the autonomous state the name of Republic, one year and nine months before independence on 15 August 1960. Reconciliation Day marks how the one-party era ended: the Sovereign National Conference closed on 10 June 1991 with a ceremony of forgiveness, made visible by a washing of hands.

Easter Sunday is kept as well, but it always falls on a Sunday and brings no day off of its own. The Easter day off is the Monday.

15 August carries a second date. On 15 August 1963 the First Republic of Fulbert Youlou came to an end, and the civil service ministry's account is that for 28 years, from 1963 to 1991, the revolutionary governments kept the day while pushing the date of independence into the background. The Sovereign National Conference put independence back into the calendar of national celebrations.

Four of the ten days off fall on a weekend in 2027, against three in 2026: Labour Day and Christmas on Saturdays, the National Day and Republic Day on Sundays. None of the sources on file records a replacement day for a holiday that falls on a Saturday or Sunday.

Common questions

Questions about public holidays in Republic of the Congo

How many public holidays does the Republic of the Congo have?

Ten days off, the same ten in 2026 and 2027, with Easter Sunday kept on top of them. In 2026 seven fall on a weekday and three on a weekend: the National Day and Republic Day on Saturdays and All Saints' Day on a Sunday. In 2027 only six land on a weekday, because Labour Day, the National Day, Republic Day and Christmas all fall on a Saturday or Sunday.

What is Reconciliation Day on 10 June?

Fête de la Réconciliation remembers the last day of the Sovereign National Conference, 10 June 1991. The conference ended the government of the Congolese Party of Labour and took the word populaire out of the country's name. It closed with a ceremony of forgiveness, symbolised by a washing of hands. The day falls on a Wednesday in 2026 and on a Thursday in 2027.

Why does Congo-Brazzaville have both a Republic Day and an Independence Day?

Because the republic came first. On 28 November 1958 the Territorial Assembly of Middle Congo, meeting at Pointe-Noire, made the autonomous state a republic inside the French Community. Full independence followed on 15 August 1960, and both dates are days off.

On which day does the Republic of the Congo mark independence?

On 15 August, listed as Fête Nationale, the anniversary of independence from France in 1960. It is a Saturday in 2026 and a Sunday in 2027. The same date also marks the fall of the First Republic in August 1963, and the civil service ministry records that independence itself was played down until the Sovereign National Conference of 1991 restored it to the national celebrations.

What are the long weekends in the Republic of the Congo in 2026?

Four come without leave: Easter from Saturday 4 April to Monday 6 April, Labour Day from Friday 1 May, Whit Monday from Saturday 23 May, and Christmas from Friday 25 December to Sunday 27 December. Two more need a single day of leave, Friday 2 January after New Year's Day and Friday 15 May after Ascension, each of which turns the holiday into four days off.

What are the long weekends in 2027?

New Year's Day on a Friday gives three days to Sunday 3 January. Easter Monday, Whit Monday and All Saints' Day all fall on a Monday, so each closes a three-day weekend, the last from Saturday 30 October. Ascension on Thursday 6 May and Reconciliation Day on Thursday 10 June each need one Friday of leave for four days.

Which days off follow from Easter in 2027?

Easter Sunday falls on 28 March 2027 and the day off on Easter Monday, 29 March. The two later movable feasts follow from it: Ascension on Thursday 6 May and Whit Monday on 17 May. In 2026 the same days were 5 and 6 April, 14 May and 25 May.
