Eid Al Wahda

After it: Green March, Friday 6 November

Saturday, 31 October 2026

Morocco has 18 days off in 2026, and 18 again in 2027. Eleven fall on fixed dates of the Gregorian calendar. The other seven follow the Islamic calendar and are confirmed only once the new crescent is sighted: Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha and the Prophet's Birthday carry two days each, the Islamic New Year one. Every lunar holiday comes ten or eleven days earlier in 2027 than it did in 2026.

Most of the fixed days date from the end of the French protectorate. Independence Manifesto Day on 11 January recalls the Istiqlal Party's demand for independence in 1944, and Independence Day on 18 November the declaration of 1955; between them, the Revolution of the King and the People on 20 August goes back to the exile of Sultan Mohammed V in 1953. Throne Day on 30 July and Youth Day on 21 August are kept for the monarch. Yennayer, the Amazigh New Year on 14 January, has been a public holiday since a royal decision of May 2023.

Three days concern Western Sahara, a territory Morocco claims as its Southern Provinces and whose status is disputed. The Green March on 6 November and Oued Ed-Dahab Day on 14 August go back to 1975 and 1979. Unity Day on 31 October, the anniversary of a Security Council resolution on the territory, is the one fixed day on the government portal's list that Nager.Date and the LegalPro guide for 2026 both leave out.

Twice in 2026 the public sector alone had an extra day off, and neither is among the 18. Both days of Eid al-Fitr fell on the weekend, Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 March, and state administrations and local authorities closed on Monday 23 March as well. After Eid al-Adha on Wednesday 27 and Thursday 28 May, government offices and banks also took Friday 29 May.

The calendars on file disagree about two lunar holidays of 2026. Timeanddate puts Eid al-Fitr on Friday 20 and Saturday 21 March and gives the Prophet's Birthday one day, Tuesday 25 August; Office Holidays has the weekend of 21 and 22 March and two days for the Prophet's Birthday, 26 and 27 August, and the dates given here follow Office Holidays. Those for 2027 are qppstudio's advance dates, and LegalPro's guide warns that a lunar holiday can move by one or two days with the official sighting of the crescent.

Ashura, the tenth day of the Islamic year, and Mimouna, which Moroccan Jews keep on the day after Passover, are celebrated without a day off. Neither is on the government portal's list of national and religious holidays.

Common questions

Questions about public holidays in Morocco

How many public holidays does Morocco have in 2026?

Eighteen days off, all of them kept nationwide. Eleven are fixed, three of them in January and three in August, and seven follow the Islamic calendar. Four of the eighteen fall on a weekend in 2026: Sunday 11 January, both days of Eid al-Fitr and Unity Day on Saturday 31 October. The other fourteen take a working day off.

When is Eid al-Fitr in Morocco in 2027?

On Wednesday 10 and Thursday 11 March 2027, by the dates published in advance. Morocco confirms the holiday once the crescent of Shawwal is sighted, so it can still move by a day. In 2026 Eid al-Fitr fell on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 March, and state administrations and local authorities were given Monday 23 March as well.

What is Unity Day in Morocco?

Eid Al Wahda, a national holiday on 31 October that marks the anniversary of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797 on Western Sahara. The government portal lists it with the other national holidays, and timeanddate has it on Saturday 31 October 2026. Nager.Date and the LegalPro guide for 2026 do not list it at all. In 2027 it falls on a Sunday.

Is Yennayer a public holiday in Morocco?

Yes. A royal decision of 3 May 2023 made the Amazigh New Year a national holiday, kept every year on 14 January. The 2011 constitution had already made Tamazight an official language of the state beside Arabic. On 14 January 2026, a Wednesday, the Amazigh calendar entered the year 2976. The celebrations include dishes of local grains, among them couscous and tagoula, a barley porridge.

How long is the Eid al-Adha holiday in Morocco?

Two days, from 10 Dhu al-Hijja. In 2026 they were Wednesday 27 and Thursday 28 May, and government offices and banks also closed on Friday 29 May, which carried the break into the weekend. For 2027 the advance dates are Monday 17 and Tuesday 18 May, so with the weekend before them Eid al-Adha gives four days in a row, from Saturday 15 May.

What are the long weekends in Morocco in 2027?

On the dates on file, six need no leave. New Year's Day on a Friday gives 1 to 3 January, and Independence Manifesto Day on Monday 11 January closes a weekend from the 9th. Eid al-Adha runs from Saturday 15 to Tuesday 18 May, and Throne Day on Friday 30 July gives three days. August has two: Oued Ed-Dahab Day and the Prophet's Birthday from Saturday 14 to Monday 16 August, then the Revolution of the King and the People on Friday 20 August, with Youth Day the next day.

Which Moroccan holidays concern Western Sahara?

Three. The Green March on 6 November recalls the march of 1975 into Spanish Sahara, which the UN Security Council condemned in Resolution 380. Oued Ed-Dahab Day on 14 August goes back to August 1979, when Mauritania gave up its claim to the south of the territory and Morocco took it over. Unity Day on 31 October marks the anniversary of Resolution 2797. Morocco calls the territory its Southern Provinces; its status is disputed, and this catalogue takes no position on it.

Are public holidays paid in Morocco?

Yes. LegalPro's guide for employers describes them as paid rest days that do not count against annual leave, with pay raised by 100% for anyone who works on one, though some sectors such as hospitality and health may depart from the rule. It also notes that a tax deadline falling on a public holiday or a weekend moves to the next working day.
