عيد الإستقلال

After it: Christmas Day, Friday 25 December

Sunday, 22 November 2026

The list the Banque du Liban publishes for the public sector and the banks gives 18 days off in 2026, and most of them belong to one community's calendar or another's. Easter is kept twice, by the Western churches on 5 April and by the Eastern churches a week later on 12 April, each with its Good Friday before it and a day off on the Monday after. Christmas is kept on 25 December and, for the Armenian Orthodox, on 6 January. The Muslim days, Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha, the Islamic New Year, Ashura and the Prophet's birthday, follow the lunar calendar, and the bank marks their dates as tentative.

Some days belong to everyone. The Feast of the Annunciation on 25 March is kept by both Christians and Muslims, and three civic days mark the state's own history: Labour Day, Resistance and Liberation Day on 25 May for the Israeli withdrawal from the south in 2000, and Independence Day on 22 November for 1943.

In 2027 the calendars overlap. The Prophet's birthday and the Assumption of Mary both fall on Sunday 15 August, and the Islamic New Year on Sunday 6 June.

Days marked in Lebanon that are not days off

  1. 14 February: Rafic Hariri Memorial Dayيوم اغتيال رفيق الحريريThe anniversary of the assassination of the former prime minister Rafic al-Hariri on 14 February 2005, kept as a day of mourning. The bank's list for 2025 gave it as a day off; its list for 2026 does not, so it is shown here as marked.Saturday

  4. 6 May: Martyrs' Dayعيد الشهداءMartyrs' Day, for the nationalists hanged in Damascus and Beirut on 6 May 1916 on the orders of Jamal Pasha. Lebanon shares it with Syria. Marked, not a day off.Wednesday

The list here follows the Banque du Liban, whose calendar binds the central bank, the banking and financial sector and the public sector. Timeanddate's calendars list more: the Hariri anniversary on 14 February, extra days of both Eids and an Easter Monday typed as a government holiday. The bank's list is taken as the record and timeanddate's as the source for the lunar dates of 2027, which the bank had not published at the time of writing.

A holiday that falls on a weekend is not moved as a rule. The bank moved Saint Maroun's day to the Monday in 2025, when 9 February was a Sunday, but its list for 2026 gives Independence Day on Sunday 22 November with no substitute.

The bank's list for 2025 also included a Beirut Port Explosion Memorial Day on 4 August, for the explosion of 2020. It does not appear in the list for 2026.

Common questions

Questions about public holidays in Lebanon

How many public holidays does Lebanon have in 2026?

The Banque du Liban lists 18 days off for 2026, counting the Monday after each of the two Easters. Two of them fall on a weekend: the Assumption on Saturday 15 August and Independence Day on Sunday 22 November. The dates of the five Muslim holidays are tentative until the moon is sighted.

Why does Lebanon celebrate Easter twice?

Because its Christians follow two calendars. The Catholic and Protestant churches date Easter by the Gregorian calendar and the Orthodox churches by the Julian, and the public holiday follows both. In 2026 the Western Easter fell on 5 April and the Eastern on 12 April, so Good Friday and the Monday after were each kept twice. In 2027 the two Easters are five weeks apart, on 28 March and 2 May.

Is the Annunciation a holiday for Muslims as well?

Yes. The Feast of the Annunciation on 25 March is a public holiday for Christians and Muslims together, and Wikipedia's list of Lebanese holidays notes that both communities observe it. In 2026 it fell on a Wednesday and in 2027 on a Thursday.

When is Eid al-Fitr in Lebanon in 2027?

Timeanddate expects it on Wednesday 10 March 2027, and like every date of the Islamic calendar it depends on the sighting of the new moon. The Banque du Liban gave one day off for the Eid in 2026, on Friday 20 March, though Wikipedia's list describes the feast as lasting three days.

What is Resistance and Liberation Day?

The holiday on 25 May for the withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon in 2000, after an occupation of the south that had lasted since the civil war. The Banque du Liban's list calls it South Liberation Day. The day was a Monday in 2026 and is a Tuesday in 2027.

Is 14 February a holiday in Lebanon?

It was in 2025, when the Banque du Liban's list gave a day off for the anniversary of Rafic al-Hariri's assassination in 2005. The bank's list for 2026 does not include it, so the day is shown here as marked but not off. Timeanddate still lists it as a public holiday.

Which holidays fall on a weekend in 2027?

Five, on four dates: Labour Day on Saturday 1 May, the Islamic New Year on Sunday 6 June, the Assumption and the Prophet's birthday together on Sunday 15 August, and Christmas on Saturday 25 December. No rule moves a holiday off a weekend, though the bank has made an exception before.
