Ten public holidays appear on every published list for Equatorial Guinea. Nine fall on a weekday in 2026 and six in 2027, when 1 May, 5 June and 25 December are Saturdays and 15 August a Sunday. The Catholic year supplies four of them, Good Friday, Corpus Christi, the Immaculate Conception and Christmas; the state's own dates run from June to October, beginning with President's Day on 5 June and ending with independence from Spain, gained on 12 October 1968.
Beyond those ten the lists part ways. The timeanddate and Office Holidays calendars give International Women's Day, 8 March, as a national holiday for 2026, and a calendar for 2024 published by guineainfomarket adds Maundy Thursday and 25 May, the Day of African Liberation. Towns also stop for their patron saints: Malabo on 17 November for Santa Isabel de Hungría, Bata on 25 July for Santiago Apóstol.

A holiday on a weekend has been moved to the Monday. The United States embassy's calendar for 2025 shows it three times: International Women's Day on Saturday 8 March 2025 was taken on Monday 10 March 2025, and 3 August and 12 October, both Sundays that year, on Monday 4 August 2025 and Monday 13 October 2025. Office Holidays gives Monday 9 March 2026 in lieu of Women's Day on a Sunday, but moves nothing for Constitution Day on Saturday 15 August 2026, so no list settles what happens to a Saturday.
Malabo's patron feast keeps the name the city itself carried until it was renamed during the rule of Francisco Macías Nguema: Santa Isabel. The 2024 calendar from guineainfomarket lists twenty-six such town feasts across seven provinces, from Nuestra Señora de Montserrat in Rebola and Luba on 27 April to the Sagrada Familia, the Holy Family, in Machinda and Mongomeyen on 30 December.
Common questions
Questions about public holidays in Equatorial Guinea
How many public holidays does Equatorial Guinea have?
Ten appear on every list: New Year's Day, Good Friday, Labour Day, Corpus Christi, President's Day on 5 June, Freedom Day on 3 August, Constitution Day on 15 August, Independence Day on 12 October, the Immaculate Conception and Christmas. Some lists add International Women's Day on 8 March, and the 2024 calendar published by guineainfomarket adds Maundy Thursday and 25 May as well, which took its count to thirteen.
Is 8 March a day off in Equatorial Guinea?
The lists disagree. The timeanddate and Office Holidays calendars both give International Women's Day as a national holiday for 2026, and Office Holidays adds Monday 9 March 2026 in lieu, because 8 March falls on a Sunday. The United States embassy treated it as a day off in 2025, on Monday 10 March 2025, and the 2024 calendar from guineainfomarket names it among the national holidays. Wikipedia's list of ten leaves it out.
What happened on 3 August 1979 in Equatorial Guinea?
Francisco Macías Nguema, president since independence, was overthrown by his nephew, Colonel Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, whose brother had been among those killed on Macías's orders. The anniversary is a national holiday, listed in English as Freedom Day and in Spanish calendars as Día de las Fuerzas Armadas. It falls on a Monday in 2026, ending a three-day weekend, and on a Tuesday in 2027.
Why is 5 June a public holiday?
It is the birthday of Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, who came to power in the coup of 3 August 1979, and calendars list it as President's Day. In 2026 it falls on a Friday, the day after Corpus Christi, so Thursday 4 June to Sunday 7 June runs as four days off. In 2027 it is a Saturday.
When is Independence Day in Equatorial Guinea?
On 12 October. Spanish Guinea became independent on that day in 1968, at noon in Malabo, then the capital, and the new state took the name Republic of Equatorial Guinea. In 2026 the date is a Monday and closes a three-day weekend. In 2027 it is a Tuesday, so a day of leave on Monday 11 October 2027 would join it to the weekend.
Which towns in Equatorial Guinea have their own holidays?
Many, each through the feast of its patron saint. Malabo keeps 17 November for Santa Isabel de Hungría, Bata and Baney 25 July for Santiago Apóstol, Annobón 13 June for San Antonio de Padua, Mongomo 12 December for the Virgen de Guadalupe, and Ebebiyin 9 September for San Pedro Claver. The 2024 calendar from guineainfomarket counts twenty-six of these feasts in the seven provinces it covers.
What are the long weekends in Equatorial Guinea in 2026?
Six come without leave: Good Friday, 3 to 5 April; Labour Day, 1 to 3 May; Corpus Christi and President's Day together, 4 to 7 June; Freedom Day, 1 to 3 August; Independence Day, 10 to 12 October; and Christmas, 25 to 27 December. Two more need one day of leave each, Friday 2 January after New Year's Day and Monday 7 December before the Immaculate Conception.
Is Easter Monday a holiday in Equatorial Guinea?
No list on record includes it. Good Friday is the Easter day off kept nationwide, on 3 April in 2026 and 26 March in 2027, and the weekend after it ends on the Sunday. The 2024 calendar from guineainfomarket adds Maundy Thursday, Jueves Santo, and marks a school Easter holiday from 25 March to 2 April 2024.
