Ten public holidays are kept on all three islands of the Caribbean Netherlands, and each island adds days of its own, so the calendar of Bonaire is not the calendar of Saba. The National Office for the Caribbean Netherlands lists Dia di Rincon on 30 April and Dia di Boneiru on 6 September for Bonaire, Emancipation Day on 1 July and Statia Day on 16 November for Sint Eustatius, and Saba Day on Friday 4 December for Saba in 2026. Two of the ten shared days, Easter Sunday and Whit Sunday, always fall on a Sunday.
The shared days follow the Dutch and Christian calendars: New Year, Good Friday, two days of Easter, King's Day on 27 April, Labour Day on 1 May, Ascension, one day of Whitsun and two days of Christmas. The islands' own days tell three different stories: a village festival and the arrival of Spain in 1499 on Bonaire, the end of slavery and a salute to the American flag in 1776 on Sint Eustatius, and the island itself on Saba. Under the National Office's rules an employee must be paid for an official holiday that falls on a normal working day, even when the business is closed, and staff on irregular shifts who work that day are paid double.

The days are set island by island because each of the three is its own public body, and the National Office's list marks each regional day with the island that keeps it. A day off on Saba is a working day on Bonaire, and the reverse.
Bonaire's calendar changed after 2013. When King's Day moved to 27 April with the new king, the island lost 30 April, the date on which Rincon had held its festival for 26 years, and Caribisch Netwerk reported a passive protest. In 2015, after talks with employers and unions, Bonaire's government swapped Kingdom Day on 15 December for 30 April so that the total number of days off stayed the same. Some calendars, Beleven's among them, still show Kingdom Day on 15 December for Bonaire; the National Office's list for 2026 does not.
The holiday provider dates Saba Day to 6 December, the day Saba's flag was adopted in 1985. The National Office and Beleven both put it on the first Friday of December, Friday 4 December 2026, and this calendar follows them; in 2027 that is Friday 3 December.
Two carnival days are listed by some sources and not by the provider. The National Office lists a carnival Monday for Saba, dated 28 July 2026, which is a Tuesday, while Beleven gives Monday 3 August 2026. Beleven and the Wikipedia list also give Bonaire a carnival holiday in February, which the National Office's list leaves out. Neither appears in the calendar above.
Several days fall on a weekend. In 2026 Dia di Boneiru is on Sunday 6 September and the second day of Christmas on Saturday 26 December; in 2027 Labour Day is on Saturday 1 May, Christmas Day on Saturday 25 December and the second day of Christmas on Sunday 26 December. The sources on file give no rule moving a holiday that falls on a weekend.
Common questions
Questions about public holidays in Bonaire
How many public holidays does Bonaire have?
Bonaire keeps the ten holidays shared by all three islands of the Caribbean Netherlands and two of its own, Dia di Rincon on 30 April and Dia di Boneiru on 6 September. Two of the shared ten, Easter Sunday and Whit Sunday, always fall on a Sunday, and in 2026 Dia di Boneiru does too. The days kept only on Sint Eustatius or Saba are working days on Bonaire.
Is 30 April a holiday on Bonaire?
Yes, as Dia di Rincon, the festival of the village of Rincon held on that date since 1989. When King's Day moved to 27 April in 2013, Bonaire lost the day off it had used for the festival, and in 2015 the island government traded Kingdom Day on 15 December for 30 April. Sint Eustatius and Saba work on 30 April.
Why is Saba Day on a different date each year?
Saba keeps its national day on the first Friday of December, according to the National Office for the Caribbean Netherlands and Beleven, which puts it on 4 December in 2026 and 3 December in 2027. Some holiday providers list it on 6 December instead, the date Saba's flag was adopted in 1985. Offices, schools and shops on the island close for the day.
What does Statia Day commemorate?
On 16 November 1776 the guns of Fort Oranje on Sint Eustatius returned the salute of the American brig Andrew Doria, which the island counts as the first foreign salute to the flag of the United States. Statia Day is the island's public holiday, with speeches, parades and music in Oranjestad, and the island's flag was adopted on the same date in 2004.
Is Emancipation Day a holiday on Bonaire?
No. Emancipation Day on 1 July, marking the abolition of slavery in the Dutch colonies in 1863, is a public holiday on Sint Eustatius only. Bonaire's own days are Dia di Rincon and Dia di Boneiru, and the Simadan harvest festival in Rincon, which grew from the farming of families freed in 1863, falls on Easter Monday, already a holiday.
What happens on Dia di Boneiru?
The island council meets in the morning, and the official programme follows with a uniformed parade, the raising of the flag, the anthem Tera di Solo y Suave Biento and speeches, with honorary citizens recognised. In 2026 the celebrations continued from noon at Plaza Reina Wilhelmina with music and food and closed shortly before midnight. The date, 6 September, recalls the arrival of Spain in 1499.
Do workers on Bonaire get paid for public holidays?
Under the rules published by the National Office for the Caribbean Netherlands, an employee must be paid for an official holiday that falls on a normal working day, even if the business is closed. The employer decides whether work goes ahead, and employees in irregular services outside normal office hours who work on the holiday are paid double. An employee who stays away when required to work is not paid.
